Ver useful as a yoga therapist in training
Very useful as a yoga therapist in training. Mukunda Stiles is truly a master yogi therapist. He imparts the sutras well in the context of yoga therapy. Easy and enjoyable to read. I get bored with many books that fill chapters with filler content before getting to the point. It s a beautiful book as well. I really enjoyed the chapter where he describes the difference between a yoga teacher and a yogi. That really helped me. In a time where I feel I am constantly being sold yoga or even taken advantage of by people claiming to be a yogi... it was nice to read someone who took they time to give a detailed description of both... and both have value... yet there is a difference. A yogi is a yoga adept.... always on the path of yoga no matter where they are in their lives.... as opposed to a certified yoga teacher who is trained well... passed the exams and can help you with yoga... they may not be a yogi. It may be their job... which is fine... but different then a yogi. A very nice, well written book. I would highly recommend reading it. I found it very informative manual.

Well organized useful book
I've looked at many books about yoga for various physical needs, and this is the most knowledgable and comprehensive book I've seen. Reading Peg2's comments, I can see what she means about photos. They would have been nice, or at least drawings of the postures in various phases, but in my mind this "inadequacy" is greatly overshadowed by other aspects of this book. Charts and comprehensive details about muscles need to be strengthened or stretched. There is a great deal of information about body structure, and the reader is guided through an analysis of their own posture problems. I have suspected that my shoulder, back, and knee problems were related to each other in some way. This book confirmed it. I have been doing recommended postures for a few weeks and am seeing real progress. I feel like I'm equipped to go into a yoga class and modify or substitute postures for to meet the needs of my body. The author has a physical therapy degree and well as yoga training and his knowledge level is very apparent in this book. I can't recommend it enough! This information is not available anywhere else that I know about, in this beautifully organized, accessible way.

A great resource. Being a doctor there are some errors
Must have book for those into yoga, teaching yoga, and all bodyworkers. A great resource. Being a doctor there are some errors, for example, she says you can fix bow legs b/c it is a muscle imbalance but admits that you cant really fix intoeing or out-toeing b/c that is a bone issue. Obviously, the bowleg/knock-knee issues can also be boney abnormalities and not corrected muscularly. But I did not find many points in which i disagreed. Her program is a good one and most of what she says is spot on. A very good learning resource.

Great book. I had to purchase as part of ...
Great book. I had to purchase as part of my yoga teacher training and started using some of the recommended joint openers on myself first with amazing results. I also recommended them to friends who love it. Great book for yoga teachers or aspiring students that care about sharing yoga with all levels of people. The book is great too because he talks about assessing his clients and if you are going to have private yoga clients you will need to do this as well and be in tune with what they need for their health and wellbeing.

Great research book
I have just started a Yoga practice, and I am interested in the therapeutic use of asanas. This book goes in depth enough to help me in this way. Mr. Stiles makes it possible to learn about and self treat all types of musculo-skeletal issues safely, though he does recommend having a teacher to supplement your own practice. This book has explained what muscles I need to stretch and strengthen. The history and background of yoga given in the introductory chapters is well written and interesting to read, which was an unexpected bonus for me. I am looking forward to using the exercise series outlined in the book.

beautiful book
When I began YTT in the fall, I ordered my books thru Amazon. I was pleased, but decided to just purchase my books at college book store this semester. Class was starting & the bookstore still didn't have the books. I did not want to fall behind in the reading. I went back to Amazon. Books shipped very quickly & in mint condition. Next time I will definitely just go to Amazon.

If you buy only one book, this should be it
I am an RN, Family Nurse Practitioner, wholistic health practitioner, massage therapist and yoga teacher. This is the best book I've seen on this topic. Mukunda Stiles begins with the history and philosophical basis for yoga therapy, then gives methods for assessment and support of physical structures to promote healing. I would love to study with the author, but having the book is the next best thing.
