I have low expectations generally and am not too picky, but what a nice present. I gave this to my brother as part of his birthday gift since I had thought it looked neat and he was really touched by it. I'm not sure if the case is leather and the compass itself, although it works, didn't blow me away, but the presentation as a whole with the awesome poem engraving makes it a really thoughtful gift. With the engraving and rustic appearance it looks like something more expensive than it was and not something you might feel bad as giving as a present to that hard to buy for person.

Nice looking gift item. I don't know about how useful and accurrate as a compass, but nice case, nice looking instrument.

The preacher has always been saying I am a lost soul. So I bought a compass to find my way. Now let's see what he has to say. Okay, that was a joke. This is a great piece if you are involved in any sort of historical reenactments. I use it in both historical photography as well as taking to various events. It fits in very well and is well made. The leather case adds to the charm of this piece as well. Highly recommended for those of you who are pirates or pirate wanna be's. Huzzah.
