The ultimate everyday mortar & pestle.
After going through a number of mainstream mortar/pestle sets, all of which either broke, didnโt hold enough, or werenโt abrasive enough inside to truly grind down ingredients, I decided to try one of these. Boom. Love the volume, ruggedness, and gristmill interior that allows me to grind up most ingredients. And itโs great for guacamole, as it leaves the consistency a little chunky rather than smooth and over-processed. It does need to be broken in and seasoned first. Donโt just get it and try to use it out of the box without doing a good break in and season first. Unless you like grit in your foodโฆ But the break in and season process is not too difficult, and is good exercise haha. You can find more detailed processes for it online, but I ground several handfuls of dried corn, dried beans, and dried rice down to powder. That gets the stone surface areas of the mortar and the pestle smooth. Then I made ground up a paste of dried peppers mixed with olive oil and spread it an around inside the bowl. I took olive oil and rubbed it into the rest of the mortar and pestle surfaces inside and out. Baked it in the oven at 500 degrees for an hour. Let cool overnight because the lava rock itโs made from holds heat for a long time. Brush the ash out the next day, rinse, and dry. The process will transform the molcajete from cement gray to black, and itโll be ready for anything.

Nice, BUT
this is a nice Guacamole Salsa Maker Volcanic Lava Rock Stone Molcajete/Tejolote Mortar and Pestle. it showed up early which is good. I can't say anything about ease of cleaning because I'm still seasoning it. This is the part they don't tell you in the description. I'm on my third round of grinding rice and salt into it, I'm told it can take up to 8 rounds of grinding. That being said it should be great when I'm done. Even thought it was wrapped SUPER,SUPER well it still came damaged. Not enough for ME to return it, but some of you mite not like the chips in it. I believe it was packaged with the damage as there was no broken parts inside the box.
