Long Overdue
There are several translations available for the Vedas, some recent, others, as the Griffith translation, available for over one hundred years. What frequently frustrates a reader wishing to understand the Vedas further is that a set of writings, the Brahmanas, are relatively unavailable. The various Brahmanas are a series of scriptures interpreting the meaning of the Vedas within the context of sacrifices and rituals, in addition to supplying the philosophical and religious background for the Vedas. This slender volume provides excerpts from several Brahmanas concerning the agnihotra sacrifice, a rite performed in the evenings and mornings. The excerpts are taken from and arraigned into various stages of the sacrifice, the philosophical ramifications of the sacrifice, and the powers of redemption and salvation derived from the practice of sacrifice. Many of the passages are from Brahmanas which have not been translated into English. This book initially appeared as a publication from Brill Publishers, an academic press, relatively inaccessible to the general public. The release of this book from Motilal makes this important book available to the general reader.
