Dead after 2 weeks
I read reviews that people reported these. Guys dying fast, but I still wanted to give them a try. My tank is flawless and I check the tank status daily. Crabs were fed and looked great at first, but both died 12-14 days later. Would not recommend buying Pom Pom crabs at this store at least.

THESE ARE NOT FRESHWATER CRABS.
I will say, the customer service was excellent. Two of my three crabs were DOA, and getting them replaced was easy. That said, these are not freshwater crabs. The one that arrived alive died a couple days later, and when I looked up if these things are just fragile... well, Ptychognathus barbatus require brackish water. These crabs will only live a maximum of five months in freshwater, if they arrive alive at all (one of the two replacement crabs was DOA as well, and now I wish I just accepted the refund). They are frequently mistaken for a different species that can live in freshwater. I can only hope this one replacement survivor can survive until the weekend, so I can surrender it to a pet store that can accommodate it.

Love them when I see them.
I recently ordered three of these guys after doing research and learning that Red Claw crabs (who need brackish water) would not have been a good option for my freshwater only tank. When the Pom Poms arrived, unfortunately, one was stuck up in a corner of the bag without water for an unknown amount of time, and I believe that’s the crab we ultimately lost… (picture) Otherwise the crabs, on the rare occasions we see them, are hilarious and I’m satisfied with the purchase. We were worried about them arriving during cold weather, but they had a little heater in the box and very easily to follow instructions for acclimating. Will probably get a few more soon. Update: A second crab has died and I’m afraid we may be close to the third passing as well… I’m updating this comment because the last two and now the third have all shared similar behavior. Each crab, the day before dying (and what the remaining crab is doing now) became very active in the tank, circling the perimeter, climbing, etc. The two that died already both did this, then went to the same exact spot in the tank and died. The third crab appeared yesterday, has become suddenly active like the other two, and now is sitting in the same location the other two died. I’m not sure what this behavior could mean, but I hope it helps others. Our local water (Missouri) is very hard/ high in calcium, so that may be the issue. All the fish, snails, and shrimp were bought locally so they would be used to the water (and we’ve not had problems with them); so maybe that’s why?

So cuteeee
So far so good! Crab came alive, seems to be active, and out and about! He likes the under ground caves I have at my tank. He’s in and out of them every 5 minutes. I’ve heard they are avid climbers and escape artist so I was expecting to see an escape in the first 24 hours of having him but to my relief he was there when I woke up. I named him Leonardo Da Pinchy! Update: it’s been 4 days and he is living his best life. Still very active and curious.

Worth the purchase
One arrived dead, the others were perfect! They gave a refund for the one that passed and it did not appear to be the fault of the seller. They have them shipped in double bags wrapped in paper, a little temperature pack, and a foam lined box. Quick response time and the Pom Pom crabs are adorable.

Sad outcomes
These little guys are so cute, But they did not adapt well. All arrived in seemingly good health but One month later, 3 out of 5 are dead. They're in an established 75 gallon tank with a few other small fish and a small 20 shrimp colony, everybody else is breeding and doing great. The five crabs immediately ran for cover and hid for the first week. One has died almost every week since then. The two that are left will take food and run around the tank with it, But my feeling is that the first three probably starved to death because they wouldn't eat the pellets, the small pieces of frozen meat, or the flakes that had fallen to the bottom. The tank also has plenty of live plants... I hope other people are having better luck but watching these guys try to crawl out of the tank all the time is just depressing 😕
