Classic Science Fiction for Your Generation
_____My review of this book might be a wee bit on the biased side because, like... Dudes and dude-ettes, there was a time when fantastic fiction was awesome. You can take your fairy-tale sparkly vampires, your cornball werewolves, your Hogwarts-issue magic wands and use 'em for suppositories. When I was a kid, our superheroes were actually possible. Superhero robots, super cyborg half-robots (THE BIONIC WOMAN), robot kids, robot helicopters, talking robot-cars driven by David Hasselhoff, there was no end to the greatness... And then the 1990s happened--sci-fi being shoved aside for magical fairy tales about vampires, magicians, and sh!t that can never exist in real life. Meanwhile, science fiction was taken over by drug-addled turd-munchers who couldn't write a coherent page, let alone a decent story. (Yeah... See the review kerfuffle about Damien Broderick's fecal matter "novel" entitled GODPLAYERS here on Amazon; some of us reviewers had to lay the smack-down on a writer.) Driza's book is a return of science to good form. Here's why... Hold on, I'll be right back--gonna get some more iced apple juice. Exercise is thirsty work._____Earnest Hemingway once wrote, "Write the best story you can and write it as straight as you can." So for the umpteenth time, here are my standards: a clearly defined plot, a good writing style, and (something that Hollywood abso-forking-loutely hates) originality. Driza's book clearly meets the standards. Introducing Mila, a teenage girl who finds out that her existence may be less than genuine, the book quickly brings us into a private world of survival, danger, and fights for survival. Mila finds herself running from and fighting a military leader gone bad, a domestic terrorist group, and--in some ways--even herself. See that, it's a coherent plot._____Now, let's talk about style--writing style. Driza's novel is told in a way that dutifully explains the reasons for the character motivations. It's also done in the somewhat believable tones of a typically conflicted coming-of-age teenager. I say somewhat believable because I spent too long being an educator, still in awe at what most of what you youngsters believe and say these days. Yeah, well... Anyway, the main character Mila says things that are just all sappy and lovey-dovey when it came to her companion Hunter--too trusting by far--and also perhaps quick to violence. The same could be said for her psychopath "sister," maybe less so than that bad-apple megalomaniac bad guy. Still, Mila acts like a young lady growing up; the language reflects that. It also delivered the story in such a way that the reader always knows what the fork is going on. If the plot is the actual story, the writing style is the machinery by which it is delivered to your brain. Thank goodness the mechanics of that thing actually work._____See how that works? Write a COHERENT plot in a COHERENT manner, and everybody's happy. Yes, you drug-addled hippies-turned-corporate coke-heads at DAW, TOR, and ACE publishing, I'm talking to YOU. If sci-fi noob-comer Debra Driza can outclass your coke-snorting, acid-tripping stable of fake award-winning "authors," then you need to clean house or have them take 100-level courses in composition. There, four stars for awesome science fiction how it's supposed to be. By the way, I docked Driza's work here one star for trash-talking technology and being unoriginal in that regard; that whole technology-is-evil theme found in EVERY SINGLE SCI-FI NOVEL PUBLISHED SINCE THE YEAR 1990 needs to go away. Otherwise, it's good work.

Review: 3 ½ out of 5 starsThe gorgeous eye-catching cover of Mila 2.0 is what initially captured my attention of this book and the intriguing synopsis had me sold; I have only recently started to embrace the Sci-Fi genre and Debra Driza’s action-packed debut certainly kept me entertained from the beginning through to the end but also left me with a number of unanswered questions.Sixteen year-old Mila believed she was a human living in a small town with her ‘mother’ after the death of her ‘father’ and was never meant to find out that she was an android, built in a science lab and kept hidden to avoid not only the person who helped create her but another group intent on using her for her abilities.Mila was a really sweet likeable character, I adored her devotion, vulnerability and loyalty, and you wouldn’t have guessed she was a machine based on her emotions and feelings; she really grew in strength as the story progressed both in personality and physically but it took me a while to fully understand her and the reasoning behind why everything had been kept so hidden; I think there is a lot of information we are yet to find out.The plot was quite intriguing; Mila was created as a military experiment in artificial intelligence and has been programmed to do the unimaginable and the group behind the experiment were brutal in their teachings and with the plans they had for her. The story was written well, the ongoing action and the information we are being fed kept the pacing consistent although at times I found it was information overload, scenes were being drawn out and sensory details seemed at times to be missing, it was enjoyable none the less but as the first book in the series, it didn’t truly wow me.I liked the secondary characters but we don’t really learn a lot about each of them, I wanted to know more about Hunter especially but he didn’t play a huge role and I feel there is still a lot we haven’t yet found out about him. Lucas was wonderful but also quite mysterious and Mila 3.0 and the bad guys were each written well but needed to be further developed.I would have loved more romance and initially I thought there would be an opportunity between Hunter/Mila but unfortunately nothing really progressed, although he seemed to play heavily in her thoughts there was no real outcome and he was absent for a majority of the book. The ending was heart wrenching and I still have a number of unanswered questions so I am definitely eager to see how the story progresses in the sequel.Overall, Mila 2.0 is filled with conspiracies, violence, intense action scenes and hopefully the possibility of a budding romance; it left me satisfied yet eager to learn more.Thank-you kindly to Harper Collins Children, for the opportunity to read and review Mila 2.0.

Not my normal cup of tea, but the Android aspect drew me in...
When this book first came out, I was drawn in by the cool cover & the storyline. But a YA book? I have enjoyed a few.....But this a YA sci-fi thriller about a girl android. I know, I know, how can an android be either male or female? You just got to go with the flow. This was not my normal cup of tea, I usually read action/horror thrillers like: Arisen, Book Four - Maximum Violence by Glynn James/Michael Stephen Fuchs. This is a special forces/zombies super action/horror thriller. "R" rated action for sure....Despite the "PG-13" aspect of Mila 2.0, I did enjoy reading it. The story started out a little slow, letting the readers see how Mila acted as a "normal" teenager...in and out of high-school. But when Debra threw in the 18 yr old hunk love-interest, I started to suspect this book was not for me.....But once Mila's secret was out, the story & action sure picked up! The buzz going around was that this book featured Jason Bourne style action. H'mmm, no. For Jason Bourne style action there would have to be a heck of lot more blood & guts flying around. Since the action was toned down for the YA readers, I would say the action was more along the lines of the old A-Team TV show. But there is no denying ths suspense/thrill aspect of this story. I'll read the next Mila book just to see how this story develops. I am looking forward to future battles between Mila 2.0 and Mila 3.0. I suspect the Mila 3.0 character will develop more and more as the series goes on.The adult in me would LOVE to read a Mila story written for adults with TRUE Jason Bourne/Matt Reilly style action. Let's see Mila fully unleashed! The body count would be prettty darn high. Mila is one tough chick....see, Debra got me thinking of Mila as a girl, not just an android.

I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next
Let me start by saying I kind of hate where this book leaves us in the end. It’s not a completely illogical place to pause, but it doesn’t feel like the right place to have taken a break. There’s a lot of unanswered questions that I hope will be covered in the next book. And I can forgive that, since it’s part of a series and I can immediately start reading the next. I might not have been so forgiving if I read this when it first came out and had to wait for the next one to be published. It’s easy to see why some have compared this to ‘Divergent’ and ‘I am Number Four’. To continue with the books to movies theme, I’m also seeing shades of ‘I, Robot’ here. There’re the bones of a fantastic story in the premise and overall, I enjoyed it. The start is tough to get through because it takes a while to get going, but once it does, the story takes off at a break-neck pace. There’s several really great moments in the book. There’s also a bunch of stuff that doesn’t make a lot of sense with the rest of what we’re given in this first instalment. I want answers to questions I still have, so I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next.
