Where have you been?!?
My husband and I have a daughter who turned 8 this November and she still couldn't read. She was held back and was placed in the first grade with her 6 year old sister. Seeing her struggle was heartbreaking! We as parents tried EVERYTHING to get her to read. We had her vision checked, we took her to specialist and to tutors and even placed her in summer school. We bought hooked on phonics, and subscribed to all kinds of online "reading programs". We tried the "Teach your kids to read in 100 easy lessons" and NOTHING was working. We were beyond frustrated. Then one day I fell upon BOB Books on Amazon and decided that for 15 bucks it was worth a shot. What did we have to lose?As soon as I started my daughter on these books it was like a light went off! She was READING!! These books are small, short and eaisly laid out so children do not get overwhelmed with too much. Its been about 2 weeks and my daughter is begging to read to us every night. The same daughter who we bribed and begged to sit through just a paragraph of a book just weeks prior with no success. My daughter is now in the process of being moved into second grade and I couldn't be more proud with her success. I'm now buying these books for every mom I know. Thanks BOB Books!

Sam looks like a klansman!
I get that the character Sam is probably supposed to be triangular or conical to differentiate him from round Mat, but he is definitely, creepily, and disturbingly klansman-like, complete with robe and hood. What editor at Scholastic let this slip by?! I'm returning the books and that's unfortunate because the books actually seem to be decent early readers otherwise.

Perfect for beginning reader
My son is just beginning to sound out words and these books are exactly what I was looking for! It comes with 12 books in the box set. They start with only a few words in the first book. Then they get progressively longer but still with easy to sound out words.

Effective way to start learning to read
During our reading time, I had a hard time to get my 5yo son's attention on the words of books. Most of the time he only liked to focus on the colorful pictures and scanned quickly at the word lines. So it's difficult to teach him to read and remember even the simple words. I gave Bob books a try and so glad that I picked them, since now the little boy has really focused on the words and learned them quickly, yay! The simple drawing of the books are intentional to withdraw the little ones' attention from the animated pictures, that's the main point. The only thing need to be improved is the connection between the words and the pictures. Sometimes my son can guess them easily based on the pictures like dog, cat, bird, bug without really learning the words. But it's helpful and effective to learn sigh words. I would strongly recommend these books for the very beginning reader to build up their confidence in reading.

4 year olds can read with these books
Each book in the set contains 8 pages of actual words for the child to read with an additional last page that always says "The End." Most pages have 4 to 6 words on them. In this set, book 6 is the challenging book because one page has four sentences and 15 words. Book 6 of the set also has several pages with double lines. We started reading these a couple months before my son's fourth birthday because he had finished all his letter sounds in a Montessori pre-school that year. A friend said her four year old was reading with these books so I said why not. When I we did the first book, I can't say my son was reading them himself right away. I had to help him learn the word in each book one time and then he was doing it himself. By book four he was sounding out words himself. The first time you read a new book in the set it is painful. I make my son master the book he is on before he can go onto the next one. The one exception in this set was book 6, its particularly painful, I think due to that one page with two sets of lines. I am now getting Stage 1 Stories to supplement. My son is beyond excited when he finished a book and has to call grandma to tell her when he has moved on to the next book in the set. It's awesome to see how proud he is of himself. I used to read 4 to 5 books a night to him and now I am lucky if I get in one or two. He is reading the others.

Love BOB books!!!! Mom of 3 and these are where to start!
Wonderful set of books!! I started all of my children reading on these! We lost our sets in a move, and didn’t hesitate at all to rebuy them! They are easy for the children and fast so they don’t get overwhelmed. And as they learn the pride in themselves is worth every penny and more!!

Perfect for the very first books your kinder reads
My son is in kindergarten. While he rocks at math, science and history, reading is boring to him and he is struggling. These books are really helping! I know some people gave them low marks for being boring. Well, you can't do that much when you are trying to make it actually readable for a child who has not ever read a book on their own yet. Using just a few 3-letter words these books were the first my son ever read all by himself and he was so proud. Are they boring? Of course, a bit. "Mat sat." Not exciting, but readable. NOW here is what you do... you, the parent, make them interesting. When he read "Mat sat." I raved and raved about his reading ability. The page wasn't exciting, but he was proud and that kept him going. Then, two pages later we get "Mat sat on Sam." And a funny picture of just that. I made a big production of it saying, "Oh my gosh, look at that." And we both giggled and giggled. Then we discussed what shapes were used to make Mat and Sam. Then, we read more.My son, a video game and Lego junkie who likes action, loved these books. Why? Because we made them fun by discussing them, giggling at them, and being proud of his reading ability.I'm saving these to read with my son's kids someday! Bob books are good stuff if you make them so.

I am impressed
I wanted to develope my 4yr olds reading skills. When I was looking at you tube videos about it, I discovered Bob books. Luckily I was able to find it on Amazon but looking at the Price I was skeptical to Invest. Trusting the reviews I bought it.It comes in a neat blue box with a set of 12 thin books. Very simple illustration with Pics. It introduces small 3 letter words and progress with each book. It also has a small guideline tip on how to engage kids.Overall I am so happy with it. This box was delivered to me on Dec 27 and today Jan 30 he can read 10 of these books on his own. Please note that I did not hurry and hardlyjust spent 15 to 30 mins excluding all the holidays in between. Still there is good progress. But make sure your kid is already introduced to phonemes (check You tube)It's really good investment.

Some enough ro ensurenit remains fun
I've been going through this with my 3 year old and he loves the simplicity of the book and pictures. Each book gets more complex and a good pace as you go along so remains fun.

Perfect for learning to read
I was given these books as a gift for my younger son who had not shown much interest in reading. He loves these books and they reading helped to spark his love of reading. I have since re-gifted that pack and bought a couple more for other early readers. I always get excellent feedback.

Good quality and easy to digest books
Brilliant books the concept seems a bit odd at first but they work, my 3 year old son is enjoying reading them. He gets so much satisfaction out of reading a full book out loud. He takes them everywhere and enjoys teaching the other kids at nursery how to read.

Excellent for teaching your child to read
My daughter (nearly 4) is very comfortable with her alphabet - largely thanks using to LeapFrog Fridge Phonics for the past year or 2.I bought these books to go the next step, and take advantage of her interest in letters and words. Schools are all using phonics to teach reading these days, so to fit in with what they learn at school, do use a phonics system. They are perfect. 12 very short books based on (book 1) 4 sounds, and adding 2-3 sounds for subsequent books. A few minutes work will finish the book.Make sure your child is reading ready first. A sound knowledge of the alphabet, and an interest in words is important. Ensure that they know the phonic (sound of the word) and not just the letter name. You will need an understanding of phonics yourself - not all of us learned to read this way - and some sense of how to blend the sounds to make a word. A "teach your child to read" book may help you with this. ( Teach Your Child To Read : A Phonic Reading Guide for Parents and Teachers is one resource. I haven't read it personally.)The child is learning a challenging new skill. You will need patience. Make it into a game as far as possible (My wife is better than me at this - racing to see who can get the word first - but daughter usually wins!) and keep it light hearted. It is important that it is fun.I am finding that one read of a book is insufficient. The books are challenging on first view. Book 3 was definitely a struggle, but on revisiting book 1, my daughter read it from end to end with barely any help. The joy on her face when she finished - to appropriate cheers from mum & dad - was a sight to remember! If your child is not ready, put the books away for a few months. Reading skills reap their full reward when it is fun. LeapFrog Fridge PhonicsTeach Your Child To Read : A Phonic Reading Guide for Parents and Teachers
