Q: is this instrument 440 = A ?

It is supposed to be. It comes in a little sharp, about 445 or 446, but I think 440 is the intention. Our other instruments in the house get tuned to 440 A and it sounds fine with them.

Q: Does it sound like the one that john batiste from late show with stephen colbert plays?

It probably would if you could get John Batiste to play it for you, but I think his is probably a more solid instrument. this one is in tune, and plays easily, although it is hard to alter the volume. The plastic seems easily breakable, so I won't just turn my kiddos loose with it. Still, the children enjoy it very much.

Q: How does the sound and intonation compare to the pricier Hohner models?

I would imagine that a more expensive instrument that is better made is probably going to sound better, but I have not heard them side by side. I have a fairly keen ear for pitch, and I can tell you the intonation on this instrument is very good. I haven't ever actually sat down with a tuner and checked all the keys, but I haven't found any to be glaringly out of tune and we have spent quite a bit of time playing it.
