Converter enables using S-VHS VCR with modern AVR
The converter works perfectly to connect a vintage S-VHS VCR with S-Video output to a modern Audio-Visual Receiver that prefers HDMI inputs. Everything simply plugged into the appropriate cables and ports and the converter provides a suitable digital signal via the HDMI. The picture quality is very good (far better with the S-Video connection than is possible with just the RCA-jack analog video line, which was the only other choice. The stereo sound is likewise passed along digitally and sounds great.A Denon receiver accepts all signals simply as "HDMI" in the setup for the port used and the signals are all passed to a good 4K TV via the HDMI link between the two. The only extra precaution I took was to add some tape to secure the connection of the small power lead to the converter that does not latch in place and seems vulnerable to being dislodged in the mass of interconnecting wires that collect behind a receiver. I also chose to feed the AC power to the converter and the VCR via a power strip that can be switched off to save power when not using them as my input. It came promptly and in very high quality packaging, even including a good 6 foot HDMI cable. Very pleased. Be sure to order a converter for the signal direction you need, since they offer separate converters for either HDMI input or output.

I had my hopes
Pros: it was easy to connectUnfortunately for me, it didn't work. I was using it to hook my old Bose system to my HDMI connections. It just wasn't happening. Ended up buying a BluRay player.

IT JUST WORKS & SO EASY TO INSTALL!
I have an old (2001-ish) Sony 52" TV that still works but I only use it when I rarely have company over so I stopped paying the monthly fee to have a cable box for that TV. I wanted to stream from my laptop to the TV but the TV didn't have an HDMI cable. Plugged this in and it immediately worked - picture and sound were perfect!

Not for connecting older equipment to a PC
My bad. I learned the the HDMI port on most laptops are OUTPUT ONLY. You can't use this to send video TO your laptop. A few newer laptops can take an input from an HDMI port, but this is uncommon. You can only use this device to send video to a monitor or a TV.When connected to a monitor, the picture has a lot of artifacts around the edges. Aspect ratio control has to be done by whatever you connect it to.

Does exactly what I needed for a 20+ year old Sony camcorder!
I needed this since the TVs I have didn't have a way for me to connect an old camcorder to anything. It worked perfectly. It took me a minute to realize it needed to be plugged in to work but that was operator error on my part. Still giddy seeing baby videos and other memories. Now to convert them all and bring them into the current millennia!

Low quality, unwatchable video, literally.
Bought this to play Video8 and Hi8 tapes over s-video to HDMI connection on HD TV set.Disaster, unwatchable picture. The same tape played on the same TV using basic a-video single cable connection looks much better, really good actually.PROCheap, and you get what you pay for.CONSThe picture is dark like viewed via a dark brown filter, most of the color spectrum is gone. The few bottom raster lines are just annoying noise, no picture. The a-video and R/L sound connectors are female and all three should be male connector just like the s-video connector. You can use the matching cable but why ... the s-video connector is right so all other connectors should follow the same logic.

Uniting Old Technology with the New
This unit works as described - it connected a video camcorder to a Smart Television so that we could see thirty year old video tapes on the large screen! The connections are simple and basic and it takes only a minute or two. Some reviewers mention the screen ratio but our TV can be set to a ratio of 4:3 from the standard 16:9 so this was not a problem. Video quality will depend on the original tape so it will not be enjoyed at 4k, but still good enough as it was back when first seen on an analog television set. This converter worked for us so I highly recommend it.
