The Chick Pea, or Garbanzo Bean, has been a staple of the Mediterranean region for centuries. High in protein, dietary fiber, folate and iron, this legume is one of the most nutritious of the legumes and is the main ingredient in foods such as hummus. The plant grows to 18-20 inches high and produces oblong seedpods that contain 1-3 peas. Plant in spring after last frost when the soil begins to warm. 1/2 to 1 inch deep spaced 3 inches apart in rows 12-24 inches apart. Harvest when the plants begin to yellow.
