A phenom
"We teach our kids rules that we don't adhereto."-Janet Jackson1989 was a pivotal juncture in Janet Damita JoJackson's career. Why? Because one of her mostimportant albums (and one of the most important andthought provoking albums of all time) was releasedthat year. "Rhythm Nation 1814" is an album filledwith songs about society, injustice, love, loss oflove and sexual innuendos. Nowadays, musicians rarelyspeak of the world's injustices, killing children andracial equality; Janet was a catalyst for doing that.So what does the "1814" symbolize? 1814 was the yearthat Francis Scott Key composed "Star Spangled Banner"and it was also the year women were granted educationbeyond the eighth grade. Less important is the factthat "R" is the 14th letter of the alphabet and "N" isthe 18th. Also worth pointing out, the theme for thisalbum was black and white. If you notice, the albumcover is black and white and so are most of thealbum's videos. Janet chose to do this because shewanted to help convey her point of "a world rid ofcolor lines (which means the absence of prejudice)." This album is mostly comprised of up-tempo tracks.Although some of this album sounds dated, the materialis of much quality. Janet has a reputation forunder-singing and mumbling. However, on this album, she gave her all vocally and the results areimpressive. The opening track, "Rhythm Nation" servesas a prime example. This up-tempo track has greatproduction and bold lyrics. Following this song are"State of the World" and the "The Knowledge."Production-wise, these songs are very much akin, butthe lyrical content is amazing. "The Knowledge"informs listeners that it is imperative that everyonereceive as much education as possible because successis much more obtainable with it. "Miss You Much" wasthe first song released to radio from this album. This song had to grow on me, but now that it has, it'sa pleasure to listen to. One of my all-time favoritetracks is "Escapade." The production is top notch andthe lyrics are simple yet very meaningful. The topicof this track is just enjoying yourself, even if itmeans breaking monotonous rules. "Someday is Tonight"and "Lonely" are definitely album highlights becauseJanet is giving her listener plenty of sensuality, andwe love every minute. The lyrics and production on"Lonely" are nothing short of sensational. I highly recommend this album to fans of all genresof music. Janet Jackson is one of the most successfulmusicians of all-time and this album is one of themost groundbreaking of her extended career. 5 starsand that will never change. Timeless music!Mikeisha's Top 51. "Escapade"2. "The Knowledge"3. "Livin' in a World (They Didn't Make)4. "Rhythm Nation"5. "Love Will Never Do (Without You)"

1989 was a great year for music. "Rhythm Nation" was no exception!
It takes alot for an artist to create a hit single or two, but it's quite another to create an album chock-full of hits that have endured for nearly 20 years (mind-boggling to think that much time has elapsed since this album's release!).Just looking at the song titles, I knew just about every song without having to listen to a single note. When I played the CD, it brought me back to a time when originality was celebrated and encouraged in pop music. It also reminded me of a time when pop radio used to play these songs over and over again, yet I never seemed to mind because they just sounded better each time. That all seems like another world today - to put it mildly! One of the worst decades in human history was coming to a close and pop music legends were making the most of the moment by releasing great albums in 1989, alot of which had a common theme - social injustices and being on the threshold of something new (which we were): Phil Collins released "...But Seriously" that year along with Don Henley's "The End of the Innocence," Tom Petty's "Full Moon Fever," Billy Joel's "Storm Front," and The B-52's "Cosmic Thing." The Fine Young Cannibals and De La Soul, among many others, also contributed to an end-of-the-decade blitz of great music. Janet Jackson added her own dynamic contribution with "Rhythm Nation 1814."This album deserved all the hype it got (which, along with the original "Batman," got quite alot!). I remember the futuristic video for the title track on MTV (back when the channel did something revolutionary - they actually played music videos all day). I also vividly recall the intense radio airplay the majority of this album got over time (which is how I got to know this, minus the Interludes): "State of the World," "Miss You Much," "Love Will Never Do (Without You)," "Escapade," "Black Cat," and "Come Back To Me."Reading the reviews here on Amazon, it clicked that Janet accomplished something that's rare for dance music: She was able to include serious messages regarding social injustices (among other topics) alongside danceable tunes and the standard slow songs. This is definitely Janet's masterpiece. It's a pleasure to finally have this in my collection. Her voice is soothing and the overall message is quite powerful. - Donna Di Giacomo

Nice Pressing of the Iconic Album - IGNORE THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS!!
OK Here is yet another pressing not getting its due! The pressing is flat, quiet and the soundstage, separation, bass, highs and mids are all well represented. Center spindle holes are perfect and there is No Skipping either!! I have a very nice setup with a very sensitive and unforgiving cartridge. This album sounds great!! Couldn't sound better unless MoFi redid it. ALSO IMPORTANT TO NOTE: The Interludes are Exactly where they should be! Nothing jarring about the placement of the interludes at all!! I have No Idea why customers are complaining about this! The original pressings excluded these interludes. And these interludes are how I have Always heard the album since first buying it on cassette in 1989. They are very distinct and important to the album, so to include them is being faithful to the album as it was meant to be heard! I am grateful they spread this out over 2 LP's and included them. This pressing Sounds Better than the original and is presented now in it's Entirety, as was meant to be! Lastly, WHO CARES that it is not 180 Gram! 180 Gram DOES NOT mean the record will sound better! I have thin standard original pressings that sound light years better than their 180 gram counterparts! MANY! If You're a fan of Janet Jackson, this is hands down her best album ever, and the pressing is Excellent, so I highly recommend this!!
