I enjoyed learning about the history of Quebec and the challenges ...
I enjoyed learning about the history of Quebec and the challenges of its beginnings. The storyline feels authentic yet hopeful so I learned about the political, geographic, and cultural challenges of the early french colonists in a way that emphasized humanity in a positive light. What this means to me, is that the book is informative, thought-provoking, and inspirational. The characters are easy to get to know and the relationships they develop suggest that there is more to "home" than just the rock you live on.

The Significance of the Rock of Quebec
Willa brings the "Rock of Quebec" alive for her readers and I marveled at the details included from her long stay up north in Canada. It seems the the classical writers would rather rely on their direct experience of being there when writing about a specific city, province, or country rather than utilizing hearsay from others. Zane Grey, Jack London, Brett Hart, and James F Cooper, and Mark Twain would have the same desires to be able to develop there stories through the true experiences of being there. Today we do our due diligence in researching specifics about peoples and places through our internet research and must pledge to ourselves to utilize this experience with care so as not to lead our readers in a direction not proven to be correct. Hopefully you also will find Willa's Canada as interesting as I did. Enjoy...

WILL A CATHER at her Best
If possible I would rate this work with even more stars. I can think of no other author who is so adept at blending the psyche of her characters with the physical environment in which those characters live to tell a story for the ages. A giant of a novel and a truly rewarding read.

enjoyable historical fiction
I liked this book for the historical aspects of Quebec City. It is a good story, presented simply as the day to day life in Quebec in the late 1600s. If there was some grand lesson or theme, it escaped me (which is why I normally read non-fiction). Like another reviewer, I couldn't figure out why it was said to be annotated. Unlike another reviewer, I was perfectly happy that the French was not translated. An enjoyable read.

I got this book to read about early times in Quebec City, Canada. A lovely story. This edition is large print which I could read before cataract surgery.
