This is a wonderful mailbox, but be warned about installation....
The mailbox is so easy to install and is ready for immediate use. It looks great and is so much more reasonable than other mailboxes of comparable size and height. A nice touch is the "post" which adds strength as well as a touch of "class" to the mailbox. The lid closes securely, and if I had only one complaint, it would be that you really have to push it closed hard and pull it with some force it to open. Of course, that being said, the mail is protected from all sorts of weather as it is securely in the interior of the mailbox. The red flag is easily seen by our letter carrier when we have mail that needs to be picked up. This saves us a trip to the post office, of course, just to mail a letter. One word of caution. Although this mailbox is approved by the Postmaster General, you must contact the local post office to ensure that where you want to put the mailbox is approved by them for carrier delivery. You cannot just put it up where you think it "looks nice" by your home. It must be "so many feet" from the curb, or home, and "so many feet" from where the carrier must walk to drive to deliver your mail. If you don't install it correctly, it will look great, but you won't have any mail delivered to it at all. The Post Office is very particular on how and where mailboxes are installed.

Works well
It works well and seems to be made fine, only had it a few weeks but seems to be holding up during winter weather. Kind of a pain to pound into the ground the way it's made, you can't very easily put it completely together and then put it in the ground unless you dig a hole first and cement or fill it in later, being the winter I just wanted to pound it into the ground with a rubber mallet, but to do that I had to pound the bottom half in and then try to line up the top half and put it together after since once you attach the mailbox there is no real way to hammer it into the round. I got it to work fine, however it's had to keep the bottom half even and straight when hammering it in, but in the end it worked out.

Just what we needed
Our previous mailbox gave us 25+ years, but the wooden post had rotted below the ground and broken off, and the metal hinges of the box were rusting and warped. We needed a replacement, but didn't want to spend hundreds on something fancy or requiring a contractor to install. This mailbox has turned out to be the ideal combination of value and functionality. It was easy to assemble with just a screwdriver, and with its two pointed metal posts, I could have just driven it into the dirt ground and it would have been stable enough to last for awhile. But I decided to dig a regular hole (using just a regular shovel), shove the posts into the ground at the bottom of the hole, and then fill in the hole with Quickrete and hose it down with water. The whole project took less than an hour, cost less than $50, and the mailbox is solid, stable and looks great! It's a bit smaller than our previous mailbox, but I don't mind because we get less mail these days anyway. Still, if you are expecting lots of packages and mail, you may want something bigger.

Easy to assemble and put in the ground.
Nice and easy to assemble. Great option if you're not looking to spend a lot. I chose not to use concrete just dirt and it stands strong. Only thing I disliked is when you contact the two base parts it has a SLIGHT wobble, not really an issue. But I put some gorilla glue on the connecting parts of the base and that fixed it. No need to glue it though I was just bored.

Things to know
The Gibraltar mailbox is both good and bad. Good: In short, I dropped mine off my kitchen counter by accident. It is strong and did not suffer at all. Robust. The flag is assembled and appears sturdy. The handle on the door is sturdy as well. Good looking black epoxy pained steel box and post is high quality finish. Bad: The 2-piece post is a "friction fit" together. No holes or fasteners to help hold 2 piece post together. The crimping off of one end to fit into the other half of the post does not stay together well. I turned the newly assembled post upsidedown and drove it repeatedly into the shipping boxes, doubled up, on my floor. I thought driving the two together would cause them to stay stuck together. Not so. There is nothing other than gravity to hold the two piece post together. Poor design. You will have to remedy this on your own. I suspect this 2 piece post joint is also a water entry point that allows water to drip down inside the post (where it is not painted) and rusts the post from the inside, out at the ground. I suggest a small tube of black RTV, applied inside the joint and again, at the outside of the 2-piece post joint to keep it waterproof. If, as I suspect, water entry rots the steel post at the ground after a short time, you will not be happy. Depending on where you live (rain and snow), you will be replacing this entire mailbox and post within a few, short years. Life expectancy estimate: 1 to 3 years. If you add RTV to the post joint, you might easily double the life. GET CRAZY: Do the earlier mentioned RTV application at the post joint. Instead of a small tube, buy a medium size tube of black RTV and also apply (smear over) to the lower half post where it will meet the ground, i.e. soil. Use a sandwich baggie over your hand to cover post evenly, coating RTV about 4 to 6 inches in length around of the outside of the lower post. Let it dry. Now you have corrosion protection on the inside and outside of the post, at the joint and at ground level, which is where these thin steel posts corrode and fail. Do this right and the extra $4.00 of RTV may net you at least a 10 year life span of the post. The mailbox is robust enough to last that long. Worth trying. Get your money's worth: get crazy.

This black mail box is very well made and sturdy. I love it being high and very deep for larger items ... magazines, etc. The decorative scrolls on the legs make it look classic. I am very happy with it.

Moved my mailbox from attached to the house to beside the steps. Do not think it would be strong enough free standing but we used railing for support making it ideal. Actual mailbox is great. Large enough with easy open/close door.
