Harder to remove than Ball's own lids.
I have used Ball's own plastic lids with good success. But when I saw these lids, I liked the colors, the little thumb lever, and the idea of a silicone seal, and it was a lot of lids for the money. What I found out the hard way is that the silicone gasket adds a lot of friction, so you have to turn the lid hard to snug it down, and it can take a lot of force to open the lid. That little thumb lever is there for a reason! The silicone seals have to be installed into the lid. It seems like it would be a good idea to remove them once in a while when washing, to clean any dried liquids that may get underneath. A bit of a chore. You can use the lid without the seal, but the lid will leak without it.In contrast the Ball lids do not have a separate seal. There is a plastic ridge molded within the cap that has a beveled edge. This edge compresses against the inside lip of the jar for a leakproof seal. Since it is smooth plastic, it does not add any friction, so the Ball lids are much easier to tighten and remove. And since there is no separate seal, they are easier to clean. I just throw mine as is into the dishwasher; the label inside the lid says they are dishwasher safe.So bottom line, these nice colored lids may be fine for some, but if you or a loved one has arthritis or otherwise have problems opening jar lids, the Ball brand lids will probably be a better choice. (They are also made in the US.)HOW I ASSIGN STARS IN A REVIEWThe star ratings are always in relation to the item's intended purpose, type, and durability.5 stars - The item is perfect with no room for meaningful improvement. The item performs its intended function consistently, and without fail. It also appears to be durable in its manufacture and materials.4 stars - While not perfect, any imperfections are likely to go unnoticed in normal use. The item should be durable given normal care and handling.3 stars - The item has significant short comings or limitations, but these do not significantly degrade performance. And/or the item may not be durable if not handled with some degree of care.2 stars - The item has defects or short comings that compromise performance. And/or the item may be likely to fail prematurely even with careful use.1 star - The item does not function correctly in any meaningful way or is very difficult or even hazardous to use. And/or the item failed completely with very little use.

I like these lids very much in addition to other style lids
The plastic silicone rings to keep the lids leak proof are removable in a recessed track on the inside of the lids and I never use those because they are a bit tedious to remove and clean especially if they are oily because they are delicate whereas the metal liners from the original jars are easier to put in and take out and work great. Besides making them leak proof the metal lids protect that recessed tract in the lid from getting food or oily because that track is more difficult to clean well. The ridges on top of the lids are great for safely stacking in your fridge or cabinet. These lids fit perfectly on Kerr jars but although they fit on Ball jars they are snug and more difficult to remove even with that handy tab on the lids to help remove the lids more easily. That is why I gave them a 4 star rating. The colors are also handy for ID-ing various formulas or for knowing a new batch from an older batch of similar contents.Unless you are traveling or shaking the jars vigorously the liners are not even necessary. You can safely shake liquids gently, but I will do that over the sink just in case the lid does not have a liner or was not tightened enough w/o a liner. But I still like to mostly use those metal liners not just because they are easy to use and clean, but they prevent strong odors of foods from tainting the inner lids.

LEARNING CURVE
I love the design of these lids. As a person with Arthritis in the hands, it SOUNDED like a great idea. The problems:- The design makes it a little more difficult to clean with a sponge, you'll likely need a straw cleaner to get in the grooves where the seal sits. (I actually don't even care about this, but some people will, especially those who clean by hand)- If you tend to over-tighten the silicone seal works too well and will stick (for a lack of a better term) to the glass jar. This makes it very difficult to open... Regardless of the catch... In fact, normal canning lids are WAY EASIER to open.- last but not least... They just don't last.I can't blame them too much... they're made out of plastic and my hopes were too high. They're thick enough and seem well made, unfortunately, one already broke after less than two weeks.Edit: Thus far the remaining lids have held together. Keep in mind that you cannot over tighten these or they will crack quite easily. I am adding stars because the others have done fine since I figured out how to use them. To get the lids on properly without cracking sometimes you have to gently loosen and tighten (over and over), it seems that the problem is that sometimes when opening the silicone washer sticks to the jar and makes it difficult to open - gently loosening and re-screwing while putting the lid on seems to help move the washer down so it doesn't stick as bad and cause the lid to crack.May purchase more because they're so convenient and I like the single piece lid a lot better than two-piece metal lids. However, due to the problems I've had with them I cannot suggest them for anything that'd go in the freezer or fridge because this will make the lid stick worse and more likely to crack. They work pretty good for shelf-stable items (like body butter) and are definitely airtight.

Almost… Perfect plastic lids
Just an update: On a couple of the gifts I gave away the lids have been broken. I am not sure how this happened but they are not as sturdy as I thought. I, personally have not had this problem but I reduced the rating from 5 to 4 because of this. I would still buy this product again.I have bought a couple of packs now and they are perfect for my jars. I use mason jars for storing so much of my pantry items. I have got them also to give away gifts like toilet bowl bombs. They are good looking and will not rust like the metal lids and seal well to keep the bombs dry. They are also easy to open because of the tab built into the lid.

Great for everyday use
Metal canning lids are great for heat-canning foods. But if you are using your mason jars for everyday items like leftovers, home-made yoghurt, or other non-canning uses, these make using the jars much easier. The little tabs on the lid make it much easier to open/close, especially for those that might have a manual limitation such as arthritis, or for those that are worried about slicing their fingers on the metal lids.Smooth enough that it's easy to write on them with water-erasable markers. The lids also allow stacking jars a bit more secure than stacking on the metal lids.7 is a strange number of lids, but I'm likely to buy another set soon.

Exceptional for lacto fermentation, hold dishwasher very well
Great for lacto fermentation, they don't leak, I like that they give you a nice soft sense of sealing. The design of the little thing sticking to the side of the lid is fantastic, it helps lever to open the bottle when it's too tight. I do lacto fermentation and putting them once in the dishwasher removed completed the odour, no traces! This was a nightmare for me with the metal lids.I would buy them again.
