Surprisingly good with a great retro aesthetic
Sound Quality: 8 / 10Styling: 9 / 10Mic Quality: 7 / 10Value For Money: Off the charts!!!!!I love retro stuff, me. I'm practically a retro relic myself, so when Gioteck dropped me a note on social media and asked if I'd like to review them, I had a look at the store page, then totally ignored them and just went and bought a pair for myself. I wanted this review to be fair and impartial, and not skewed by having received them for free.Firstly, the looks: Yes, they look superbly retro. The frame, cans and foam pads are straight out of the 80s. Those that I'm referring to are the Sony Walkman headphones that came with the earlier walkmen (walkmans?), the famous (infamous for its fragile buttons?) WM-4 and other contemporaries. I've worn them out and have recieved a compliment in Starbucks from someone who said it was awesome to see retro gear still working ;-) So, on the styling front, they get a thumbs-up.The sound quality is the one thing that's NOT retro. I remember these 'phones when we got them originally, and the sound was tinny and the bass was crunchy with distortion at high volume. These 'phones are far far far superior in sound quality. In fact, I'd say that for £12 (the price when I got them), the sound quality is very very good. Now don't expect these to be up to the level of Westones or Shure IEMs, they're not. The treble is pretty good, but the midrange and bass are a little muted, especially the bass.Listening to electronic music, they were very crisp and clear, but switching to something with a lot of bass and the 'phones are just ever-so-slightly muddy. With something like dubstep, they're capable, but you'll miss something with a more flat response. But hey, considering these were £12, and my Westones were £300, I'm pretty darned impressed. What is very impressive is the sound isolation. I remember how leaky the originals were. Even in a loud car you could hear the tss-tss-tss of music from someone sitting in the front or back. These are amazingly well isolated considering it's just foam padding. I'm guessing the design of the cups focuses the sound inwards much better than the originals. The inline microphone with mute button was a really nice surprise, I wasn't expecting that. Testing it with a voice recorded the mic is capable and crisp. It won't win any awards for clarity, but if you're using it with your phone you'll definitely be heard and understood. The mute button and volume buttons are also very sleek and the whole inline control unit doesn't snag like some I've used. The packaging is all cardboard and frustration-free, which I appreciated. Having all the packing material recyclable is important to me. The box is actually really nicely styled, and it was a shame to have to throw it away :)OK, so those are the good points, let's look at the less good. The original 'phones had those tangle-tastic thin black wires, and this has a flat, more modern cable. While this is great and fewer tangles is good, it does ever-so-slightly detract from the retro aesthetic. Also the cable length is about 15cm shorter than I'd like it to be. For a walkman in your pocket, it's okay, but if it was at the bottom of a rucksack on your back, or plugged into the PC, you'll probably need an extension cable, The cable is only about a meter long.If I was to be a little critical, I'd say that the foam pads are about 25% larger than the equivalent ones from the era, making the 'phones a little bulkier than the originals. Finally, when connecting the 'phones to a Huawei Android phone they weren't recognised at first until I toggled the mute button off and on. I tried them with a different phone and they were fine. Not sure what the issue is there, but if you find they don't work with your phone, give that a try. It's slightly annoying having to do it each time, but I'm not bothered by it any more.

Too tight.
For me these are fairly comfortable for about 10 minutes, then they start to feel really tight on my ears, and the foam seems to make my ears real hot and sore. I have a pretty average size head, just not for me I'm afraid. They do seem well made. Would have returned them but missed the deadline

Reminds me of the 80’s, but not in a good way...
Pros:- Build quality, packaging and instructions very decent for the money.- Certainly capture that retro aesthetic.- Would be good for a Starlord cosplay.- Probably the right price considering (see cons)Cons:- The general sound quality is on par with headphones you used to get with cheap off-brand Walkmans, or nowadays maybe the better Poundland headphones.- Bass is... absent to the degree that is makes songs sound like alternate versions, when gaming expect an explosion to sound more like a thigh slap.- Much larger and more chunky than the type of headphones they’re replicating, this doesn’t come across in the pictures.- The metal adjustment straps, instead of curving around the headband stick up like two antenna, not the most stylish look.- Uncomfortable. Conclusion:If you’re looking for some lighter retro style headphones/headset with decent sound, get some Koss Porta Pros, there’s a reason they’ve been making them since 1984 and they have a five star What-HiFi rating.I grabbed these out of curiosity, you get what you pay for.

A functional budget headset at the expense of audio quality.
Unit provided by Gioteck for review. The TX-20 Stereo Gaming Headset by Gioteck sports an attractive 80’s aesthetic, but can this economically priced headset rock the high notes and deliver on the expectations set by the packaging?“This headset is designed for all popular gaming formats and provides crisp, clear voice transmission and great stereo sound”Tested devices: iPhone 6s, iPad Pro 2017 & Nintendo SwitchMy initial impressions on packaging were good, it was a nice touch using spot UV on the box art, and the headset inside is secured with an inner cardboard sleeve making it recycling friendly. A foldable quick start guide is provided - highlighting the setup with a series of diagrams showing you how to plug a 3.5mm jack into your controller or device. I couldn’t agree this was necessary given the audience of the product, but it’s there. The headset itself is pleasant to look at and adopts all the qualities expected from a pair of headphones in the 80’s. The orange foam provides a nice contrast against the black and silver plastic headband and fits snugly and comfortably over the ears. The in-line controls conveniently enable you to adjust the audio volume and mute chat whilst gaming.Audio test 1: iPhone 6s | music test | Spotify via lightning cable adapter.I first tested a range of music styles from Rock, Dance, Punk and Synth Wave.It was immediately apparent the economical price tag came at a cost, and that cost is Bass. I noticed the volume wasn’t loud enough from the iPhone, so I wheeled the audio on the in-line unit to maximum. I could hear environmental sounds over the music which would make this inconvenient for any portable use.Although the sound lacked Bass, the audio was clear and defined and never distorted.Audio test 2: iPad Pro 2017Music test: Spotify via lightning cable adapter.Games tested: X-COM enemy unknown.Films tested: Blade Runner, Blade Runner 2049YouTube test: Kung FuryUsing the iPad Pro the volume issues were absent. The volume reached levels which drowned out any environmental distractions. Each of the tests provided clear distinguishable sounds, this was especially improved by Blade Runner 2049’s outstanding sound design. Despite this, I always wanted more bass, I longed for the volumetric depth I knew was in each mix, but knew that was something the TX-20 was unable to achieve.Audio test 3: Nintendo SwitchGame test: via 3.5mm jack.Games tested: Firewatch, Thumper, Dark SoulsAfter the iPad Pro, I was really looking forward to using this on the Switch, which I use predominantly on the go. After loading Fire Watch, again I noticed an incredible lack of volume - the same experience from the iPhone 6s test. This raised concerns as the volume was inconsistent across devices and I wasn’t sure why?It made me question if I would run into similar issues between a PS4 or Xbox One?Thumper is a great yardstick as the developers actively encourage players to wear headphones to enrich the experience, and again, I found myself frustrated at the low volume and lack of bass. The In-line audio microphone does an acceptable job of capturing your voice, the quality is comparable to Sony’s bundled ear piece mic. The only inconvenience I notice was the interruption of additional noise through contact with the plastic unit that the mic is housed in. If the In-line controls brush against clothing, the recipient will hear it.ConclusionThe TX-20 Stereo Gaming Headset is a functional headset that’s economically priced at the expense of audio quality. The look and style of the headset will be for a very specific audience, but I personally liked it a lot. Whilst you would struggle to hit the volume peak needed to lose yourself in a game on your Nintendo Switch, or in your music through Spotify on the iPhone 6s, it’s a good looking headset that will undoubtedly meet the needs of some at a very reasonable price. The iPad Pro provided the best results, and for some that may not be enough.Aesthetic 4/5Comfort 4/5Features 3/5Product Quality 3/5Value for money 4/5Audio Quality 2/5
