I Loved it
Onyx MacKeefe is used to everyone believing he is the devil because of his odd coloured eyes. He also has a habit of dying and coming back. His mother has been arrested for a murder that happened years ago, and to hope to save her he must return the book she stole.Lady Loveday de Lacy is determine to get the book from her father's murderess. She needs the charms written in it to stop her mother from losing her mind. She has already lost too many of her family. If traveling to the highlands with the sexy Scotsman is the only way, that's what she will do.This is an usual highland romance. Our hero is really quite vulnerable. Our heroine is brave and stubborn. With the plague running through the country travel can be even more dangerous. There are a lot of emotional moments and visits from characters we have met in previous books. This is the first in a box set. I can't wait to read the rest.

Scotch or English?
All his life Onyx MacKeefe grew up believing he was a Scotchman. On his 20th birthday things took a drastic change. A beautiful English woman came into his grandfather's pub looking for his mother. She accused her of being a murderess. She says she will ask the King for leniency if his Mother will return the items she stole from her Mother. Onyx kidnaps the English woman to ensure that she will keep her promise . They start a perilous ride to the Scotish Highlands that night. While they are at the Mac Keefe camp, Onyx learns that he is the son of an English Earl and that his Mother was not the woman who gave birth to him. The story has many twists and turns, romance and adventure, along with a little humor. This is a fine fast read story for when you need some peaceful time.

Could’ve been sooooo much more
Fenella MacKeefe came to England for vengeance on the Englishman who had killed her husband. When trying to leave England, she bartered her passage to Scotland by accepting a closed box from a dock worker. On her journey she found out that the box contained the dead body of the Earl of Blackpool's child - but soon she realizes that the child isn't dead. Fenella returns to her clan in the Highlands but 20 years later the past comes and hunts her down.A really good plot that could’ve been so much more! Excellent ideas were continuously thrown into the storyline but weren’t elaborated enough to add depth to the plot. Consequently these ideas were reduced to sudden flashes that interrupted the flow of the plot more than added anything. What I missed most in this book was the atmosphere. There was nearly no description of scenery, whereas the Highlands offer themselves for this. Neither were there any description of feelings, expressions etc. Combined with above mentioned brain flashes the book failed to impress me.And just one final remark: It’s widely known what happened to women who were even only faintly thought of being involved in witchery during the Middle Ages. I was rather surprised to find out how unconvential everybody deals with this issue in the book and I’m persuaded that the author’s “special” approach to the historically known facts would’ve needed to be put in a relevant context.

Family bonds
I truly enjoyed the story of Onyx and Lovelle. While Lovelle fell for Onyx, I think, rather quickly Onyx took his time to be sure of his feelings. With so many questions about his past, family and heritage it made sense. It was sad that Fenella would not answer his questions but she didn't have time. Onyx had to overcome his abandonment issues to heal himself from his "little death" issue as well. Lovelle is a very strong woman to be able to part with Onyx. Adian and Ian are very good friends and very strong characters as well. The ending was exceptional and totally unexpected. I would definitely recommend the book.

Adventure and Mystery
This Highland adventure begins when Lady Lovelle accuses Fenella of stealing the Book of Hours, a book of prayers and charms and murdering her father (her father had killed Fenella’s husband) and has her taken captive. In turn, Onyx takes Lovelle as insurance his mother will not be executed. At the same time, Onyx discovers that Fenella is not his real mother. Onyx and Lady Lovelle must find the Book of Hours in order to save both their mothers, his from execution and hers from illness. All they have to do is make it back to Love’s castle in time (a week). Two quests: find the book and find his real family. Along the way they might find something they are not looking for – love. Onyx is quite well written with vivid descriptions of the settings and complex characters. There are many twists and some surprises you’re going to love.

Exciting Historical Read
I have not read this author’s work before. This is the first book in the “Madman MacKeefe” series, but it is interlinked with this author’s previous series “Legacy of the Blade” & “Daughters of the Dagger”. Although it can be read alone, it is probably better to read these series first as characters from these books feature here. This book was a very enjoyable read with only a couple of typos (mostly extra or misplaced punctuation.) Although it does not contain any swear words, it does have love scenes. The book ends a little abruptly with a HFN, & there are excerpts of a book from the 3 series. I liked the main characters although Onyx & his “madmen” friends are a little immature. I was a little confused by Lady Lovelle’s age. I don’t believe it’s given, but she must have been older than Onyx as she remembers the “Book of Hours”, which was stolen twenty years prior. The attraction between the H & h is instant, & they do act on that attraction. There’s a little fantasy/ magic involved (the dagger, the old woman, the charms...) & the ending was a little predictable.Onyx is rescued as a baby by Fenella MacKeefe & taken back to Scotland. Growing up, he never knew he was adopted after his English father ordered his baby son to be thrown overboard from a ship. It is a secret Fenella hid from him, until on the eve of his 20th birthday an English Baroness & her guards turned up in Scotland to look for his mother.Lady Loveday/ Lovelle meets the handsome Scotsman. She knows he knows the woman who murdered her father twenty years ago. She has Fenella arrested, but ends up being kidnapped by Onyx & his friends. They have a week to find & return the Book of Hours to her home in England, or his mother will die for her crime.

Humour and romance
I have read this book twice now and loved it each time. I enjoyed the rapport between Onyx and his two friends, Aidan and Ian. Onyx had quite a hard life but it was good to see how he developed throughout the book. His meeting with Lady Lovelle and subsequent relationship was endearing. This was a good paced storyline with a few unexpected twists and turns.I did receive a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. I did purchase it as part of a set as well.

Bring on the MacKeefe's
Great, I've found another author, who writes medieval with a bit of humour thrown in, the antics of Onyx and his friends left me laughing hysterically, so much so that i look forward to reading more in this series, don't get me wrong, it's not a humerous book at all, it just flows into the more serious and romantic and is a welcome bit of fun.Love, love, loved it

Why why why do I persevere with this genre?
Usual rubbish. Really really not good, full of kindergarten level introspection and impossible plot.
