Fabre's Book of Insects

I love this book. So practical and so entertaining. What a wonderful human and wonderful heart and mind. I imagine him out there, studying insects on his little patch of hot dry dirt. He’s totally absorbed and he shares his enthusiasm with you. What a lovely human.

The book has 12 nice color plates that are protected by sheets of tissue paper. The text is fun to read - "The beetle begins the journey. ... One would expect him to choose a level road, or at least a gentle incline. Not at all ! Let him find himself near some steep slope, impossible to climb, and that is the very path the obstinate creature will attempt." Fifteen chapters each dedicated to a different insect. Nice book for someone who is into old books and insects.

Fabre's easy narrative makes it easy for children and adults to understand and enjoy the life and behavior of different insects. His insight and approach (by careful observation and fact- report only) makes it a scientific book. Fabre was an amazing teacher and scientist. His writing skills as well as detailed observations make this book really interesting and enjoyable. After reading it I read other books by Fabre as well as other insect-related books. The book makes you want to learn more about insects.

A great way to understand your typical insect. It's too bad that more science texts aren't written like this. More students might go into science if they were.

Having borrowed this book from the library for my daughter's homeschool science class, I already knew what a great book it was. I purchased it for my son because I had to go through an inter-library loan to get it for my daughter, and the constraints of that process compelled me to go the purchase route this time. I was also pleased with the quick, trouble-free delivery.

A charming book, which I read as a child, seventy years ago. I enjoyed it this time too.

Exquisite plates of illustrated insects. A beautiful, valued classic. In perfect condition and exceptional service from shipper. The book itself is a marvelous classic for anyone who loves nature.

No one can read this book without being absolutely enchanted! If only this little gem accompanied all modern science textbooks - or even replaced them. I highly recommend this book.

The content is a little dated, but the book is beautifully written. I had wanted to read this book since I was thirteen, some 45 years ago. I was not disappointed. While it is not a sustained read from cover to cover, it offered multiple delightful opportunities to dip in, read, and be refreshed.

昆虫大好きな7歳の息子に購入。昆虫の本は大好きだけどこれはちょっと違ったようで、気が向いたときに5～10ページ程度ぼちぼち読んでいます。
