Like it is said in a few reviews, a bit steam does escape through the sides because the three tiers aren't fixed too tightly but that doesn't affect the functionality act all. In fact I consider that a safer approach to steaming because that reduces the chances of any mishaps due to steam pressure build up. Good quality product, makes steaming veggies easy.
