Guitar Atlas Brazil: Your passport to a new world of music, Book & CD

Concentrated insight.
I love this series, and this is the best of the six titles I have. Billy Newman really knows his stuff; the analysis of time at the beginning is superb: something I now use in my teaching. This is definitely for intermediate and higher guitarists, but the pieces are worth the effort to get right, and the accompanying CD shows you what you are aiming for. This is as good as my other Brazilian guitar book (by Nelson Faria) and much more compact and easier to follow. Highly recommended!

A gem
This book is essential homework for students of Brazilian guitar. It is one of the best resources out there, along with Nelson Faria's "The Brazilian Guitar Book." The original etudes are not only instructional, but are nice pieces in their own right. An excellent value.

Don't Waste Your Money.
The author has no concept of the pacing of learning. He almost immediately jumps into complex material. Any good writer paces the material to lead you into the basic into the complex (not so with this book.) This is a slam bam manual written for the convenience of the author and the publisher. The author reminds me of one of those math teachers who has no concept of seeing things from his students point of view and rushes along in his own world. I'm sure that the publisher loves this book because he didn't have to spend money on the pages that would lead up to complex concepts. Additionally the CD track numbers don't match up with the tracks numbers shown in the book. So if you think that you are hearing and seeing track 10 in the book, think again. The CD track maybe 10 with the accompanying book track listed as track 14. Don't spend your money on this book unless you are a trained classical guitarist. Instead look at Mike Christiansen's Bossa book offered by Mel Bay. He writes much more coherently, and appears to see things less from the ivory tower and more from the student's point of view. Additionally track numbers and CD numbers all line up. I noticed that a teacher endorsed this book, as a teaching aide. That is the very problem with this book: you need a teacher to go with it. This is not mentioned in the advertising for this book, and the included CD implies that this can be a self teaching method. If you're already a trained classical player, this book might work for you. Other than that, I'd stay away from it.
