Just perfect for beginners!
I bought several landscaping books, and this book turns out to be most useful. The book is organized into different "portfolio of designs" (e.g. narrow garden pathway, side front entrance, shady hideaway, under a shady tree, enclosed patio, etc.) For each design, it presents a list of drawings (nd pictures) showing what it will look like spring, summer, fall and sometimes winter. Every plant is geared to the Mid-Atlantic hardiness zone, and the design mix up the plants so you can have flowers year round. The drawing made it a lot easier to visualize the design than a photo. There is a plenty complete chapter of each recommended plant profiles (what types of soil, watering and sun need, growth size and spread, etc.) It also include a guide to installation and projects, with basic planting techniques. Just everything you need to get started. Starting with their portfolio designs and substituting their recommended plants with your own choice is much easier than designing the whole thing.

Excellent resource for new or renewing landscaping
I owned the previous edition of this book, and this updated version is even better than the original. The illustrations are particularly useful: what a specific garden would look like when just planted, 5 years later, and 15 years later--something that many people have difficulty envisioning. The book also devotes several pages each to specific situations, such as different treatments for a roadside mailbox, creating a seating area, and planning for a narrow space between a house and a fence. There are also specific instructions (and step-by-step illustrations) for creating walkways, patios, edging, and of course all shapes and sizes of garden beds. Species of recommended plants and trees are given, as well as information as to what soil, light, and water conditions work best for all plants mentioned. This book is useful not only in the very first stages of landscaping, but also in latter years, when other types of maintenance or treatments are needed.

I love the way the plants are shown in the plan ...
I purchased this guide for use in Pennsylvania. It offers very doable plans for the home gardener. I love the way the plants are shown in the plan at various stages of growth, which gives me an idea of what the plan will look like when the plants mature. I also purchased the equally good Northeast version.

Some useful designs
I love that this book offers a curb side view, with an ariel sketch for the different designs. The book also tells you important tid bits about your plantings such as which will bronze, flower, or have berries.
