He makes everything seem simple and worth trying
This is a very well done, visual, and detailed, book. He shows and tells everything. There are photos for every aspect of the shot, from every angle, including from the ceiling looking down, so you can really envision how the set was constructed, how close the lights were to the model and each other. He shows you the back of the camera, his exact settings including: aperture priority, ISO, f-stop, shutter speed, lens and focal length. He explains, and shows you where he focused his lights, what light modifiers he used, his power settings, and how to adapt that to your lights. On the retouching, he takes you step-by-step through the camera raw and photo process. Each step is accompanied by a supporting photo of the screen, I would say screen grab, but it looks to be higher quality. He includes keyboard shortcuts and explains why he is making a particular adjustment. For instance, he takes the recovery slider to the point where the model's face is properly exposed, but doesn't worry about the reflection on metal, or the light bulbs being blown out.He demonstrates many different photographic/ lighting looks, and they are all very different:* A classic high key beauty shot* An edgy rock-n-roll shot, this one had some cool photoshop techniques I hadn't seen, and am looking forward to trying* A dramatic beauty shot, with lots of contrast and shadows* Three light lens flare. I would call this one a slightly over-exposed with cool image in sunglasses shot.* Ring light with another cool sunglasses effect* 3-light sports setup (masculine edgy lighting)* 1-light full-length fashion shot, to name just a fewI like the fact that he explains how you can do this without spending a fortune, and that he includes several male shots, and doesn't limit himself to just polished female model beauty shots. He even includes a separate chapter where he explains how to do all the exact same shots with speedlights. He includes a gear guide that shows the exact tools he used in the book with pictures and descriptions, right up to the adapter rings and transmitters.Kelby salts the book with his usual off the cuff humor, which I enjoy. The book, amazingly, moves very quickly, is an easy read, and will be an excellent reference book. He has the uncanny ability to make everything seem easy. And, if you follow his instructions, it probably will be.

Lucid writing, lots of diagrams and numbers for light outputs, plus retouching methods in Photoshop
Whew! I finally got a book that was easy to understand that has everything needed, including numbers for light output for the various lights in a set up.There's lots of diagrams of the different kinds of setups and numbers for each light's output in the diagram. This makes it easy to look up something that you have forgotten. The writing is lucid and clear and there is no way you can go wrong. It was delightful to have clear and accurate information. Also included are ways to make changes in Camera Raw and Photoshop. I'm a veteran Photoshop user and even I learned a few things. I didn't expect this. This is just an added bonus. The book is easy to read and it's laid out logically. Chapters include how to light for high key, how to light for low key, and various setups for 1 light, 2 light, and 3 light set ups. I'm very pleased with this.

Re: Scott Kelby Light it Shoot it Retouch it
I am a two million plus exposure photographer who studied with Ansel Adams--and I regard Scott Kelby as my number one "Go to guy" when it comes to what is now state of the art--Ansel really wanted to shoot in color and make it do what he wanted it to--were he alive he would be--and referencing Scott on how to make it work. Scots new book is a must have for the photographer who makes his living doing portraits--or who would like to. His way certainly isn't the only way--but if you are going to do it different at least you should have a reason. Scott uses modern Elinchrom lights to bring back some of the Irving Penn quality to portraiture that is simply too hard to do if you have a busy schedule--going to war with your equipment is no way to create an easy to photograph relationship with your sitter--and with what Scott will teach you, you won't have to. Scott's real genius is communicating how to do a complex thing in an easy to understand way--he showed us that with Photoshop and here he does it with Portraits (and incorporates how to do the Photoshop retouching (very important) as well. You can't go wrong buying this book--unless you don't follow his advice.

Pudo ser mejor
Me gustó que tuviera especificaciones sobre el acomodo del equipo fotográfico. Sin embargo, esta parte se queda de manera gral y hay mayor enfoque en la parte de edición.

Doesn't speak down to the reader - Great tips to learn from
This is an awesome addition to my collection of photography books and a great one in the this series. It isn't too technical and speaks like you're an intelligent adult trying something new. This is important to give you confidence when trying new things with your hobby. I like this entire series. I have already learned a bunch of new things from this book. Highly recommend.
