The Kingmakers: Vampire Empire Book 3

This is one of the best series of books of their type I've ever read. Actually, of just about any type. I can't give them enough stars.The concept is an alternative history of Earth, in which vampires have risen to challenge humans for control of Earth and its resources, one of which is food. Humans. These books explore this idea fully, and describe the end of a 150 or so year period of war between the two species.These vampires are not like any you've read about recently. They are not the "live covertly with humans" type. These are ravaging, bestial creatures, but with the capacity for reason and culture. Some have risen above their genetics to aspire to be more like humans. This includes the dextrous use of hands for things such as using weapons, and, with at least one vampire, trying to learn to read and write.Prince Gareth is the eldest son of the "King of Kings" of the vampire empire. He has come to admire human culture, and makes his home in a British museum, where he can touch and consider the relics that have not yet been destroyed. And he wonders what they all mean. He aspires to a meaningful existence, and believes that this dream rests upon an understanding of history, which is foreign to vampires, by their nature.He has acquired a "library" of which he is quite proud, and he has come to a basic understanding of what his books contain. Some of the books are children's books, and one of them tells the tale of a man who creeps through the night rescuing damsels in distress. This has captured his attention, and he invents an alter ego for himself. He becomes the "Greyfriar". He travels throughout the world, dressed in scarves, glasses and gloves, to hide his vampire body, and becomes a folk hero to the human race, as he rescues those he finds in danger from vampires.On one of his forays, he interupts the kidnapping of the future Empress of Equatoria, the dominant human country in the world, as she is on a "meet and greet" tour for her nation. Ultimately, "Adele" is captured by his brother, Cesare's, forces. Cesare is the second in line for the throne, yearns to be King instead of Gareth, and he takes Adele to Britain as his captive.This begins the saga of the Greyfriar and the Empress. During the following books, he enables her to escape, in the persona of Greyfriar, and takes her to his castle in Scotland. There he eventually reveals his true identity, and nature, and begins the process of learning as much as he can from her about being human. They also begin the process of falling in love. This is not the love we've read about in Twilight, and all it's knockoffs. These creatures are altogether different.The books chronicle the tale of the Greyfriar and Adele, during the following year, through her father's death, her growth into the Empress of her world, and the war between the vampires and humans.The characters in these books are fully fleshed. We understand them completely, and develop strong feelings for them. The books are epic. The world created by the authors is irresistable. Anyone who starts this series now is lucky. I started with the first book, and the wait for the next two was painful. Don't even bother with buying just Book One to see if you like the series, or not. Just buy all three. You won't be able to put them down until you finish.These books are monumental. They are among my favorites of the last many years. They are completely original. They will likely sire many knockoff versions, as we've seen with the Twilight books, and the Hunger Games. Nothing will ever compare with this unique version.Buy them now.

This is the concluding novel in the Vampire Empire trilogy. It was an excellent end to the series. Lots of wonderful action, some romance, and epic battles. These are some great characters in a truly creative world.Adele is launching an all out attack on the Northern European vampires. She is set on using her Geomancy to its fullest to save lives and reduce combat time. At her side helping support her cause is Gareth as the Greyfriar. As the war continues Gareth realizes he might make a larger difference by leaving Greyfriar behind and stepping up to claim his birthright.This book is very well balanced. There is a well thought out and detailed world that is creative and interesting. The characters are likable and easy to engage with. There are lots of excellent military/battle scenes but also lots of tender scenes between Adele and Gareth. This book seamlessly blends steampunk themes with epic fantasy.Adele and Gareth continue to be very well done characters. Adele is strong and smart and does what she has to for her country. Your heart goes out to her and Gareth and their star-crossed love, especially since with the war moving at a faster pace Adele has to use her Geomancy power more than ever which makes it so that Gareth can't be near her without being in pain. It was pretty awesome to see Adele finally embrace her Geomancy.Gareth continues to be a complex and interesting character who is completely and absolutely loyal to Adele. He grew a lot as a character in this story and finally begins to realize that his birthright allows him a lot of power to influence the war between vampires and humans.The side characters are all very well done. Anhalt is loyal and completely supportive of Adele; he is one of the few who truly understands what she is dealing with. We learn a lot more about Mamoru and some of the decisions he makes feature strongly in the plot as well. Cesare doesn't have a ton of page space but Flay does, and she has an interesting role to play in things.This is a long book, but it doesn't feel like it when you read it. I am not a huge fan of war-based storylines, but this book completely sucked me in. The writing it so well done and so easy to read. Everything is just in perfect balance.So you want to know if Adele and Gareth get their fairy tale ending? Well I can't you that without spoiling the book, but let's just say I think readers will be pleased with how things are left. Things end in a way that I thought was plausible and, while up beat,wasn't completely fairy tale unrealistic.Overall an excellent conclusion to this series. I can't wait to see what the Griffiths come up with next. If you are a fan of epic fantasy check this series out. If you are a fan of steampunk check this series out. It is a very creative and engaging series that balances action, politics, war, and romance incredibly well. Highly recommended.

Imaginative, exciting, romantic. A very good book and so well read by James Masters. I chose to purchase this trilogy based on the fact he would be the reader as I have found his narrative style perfect for the genre.

Die Griffiths haben sämtliche Register gezogen. Wirklich sämtliche. Das Buch ist an Spannung nicht mehr zu überbieten. Kämpfe, Mordkomplotte und Intrigen wechseln sich in absolut rasantem Tempo ab. Greyfriar und Adele kommen nicht zum Luftholen. Der Krieg spitzt sich dramatisch zu und fordert unzählige Opfer - und unsere Helden immer mittendrin. Wenn man glaubt, aufatmen zu können, kann man sich sicher sein, dass die nächste Katastrophe bereits im Anflug ist. Trotz aller Gewalt (die Kampfszenen habe ich selten so realistisch beschrieben gelesen) gibt es auch unheimlich schöne Momente. Als Adele und Gareth endlich zusammen kommen, der gemeinsame Besuch der Oper (The Greyfriar - wann können wir diese Oper endlich sehen???), als Adele den verwundeten Gareth pflegt, Gareth für Adele kocht und noch so viele, viele mehr. Gareth hat einen ziemlich trockenen Humor. Ich liebe ihn. Er ist absolut sympathisch und jemand, den man einfach nur in den Arm nehmen und halten möchte.Der 3. Teil legt ein sehr hohes Tempo vor. Es gibt nur wenige Pausen, in denen man das Buch für einen kurzen Moment aus der Hand legen kann. Es ist absolut vollendet. Wir treffen Senator Clark wieder, der wie gewohnt überheblich und wenig sympathisch auftritt (ich sage nur Major Stodder), Marmoru zeigt endlich sein wahres (böses) Gesicht (selbst das schlimme Leid, was ihm durch die Vampire zugefügt wurde, kann meine Abscheu gegen ihn nicht mehr mildern - er ist völlig verrückt geworden)und Flay wächst mir letztendlich doch noch irgendwie ans Herz. Sie bleibt zwar ein böser Charakter, trotzdem erwirbt sie meine Sympathie (erinnert mich die ganze Zeit an Xhex von den Black Daggern, Flay ist einsam und hat Gareth auf ihre Weise geliebt. Ihre Enttäuschung ist so gut nachvollziehbar) und selbst Cesare kann ich einiges an Sympathie abgewinnen - der gehässige kleine Bruder: I'm the king! And I'm the Greyfriar - and now I'm the king! Das war schon schlimm - trotzdem musste ich an dieser Stelle lachen. Das Buch hat mich 2 komplette Tage an die Couch gefesselt und ich war froh, dass ich allein war und keinerlei Verpflichtungen nachzukommen hatte. Nächstes Jahr steht Edinburgh ganz fest auf meinem Reiseplan. Ich will Gareths Burg und Greyfriars Kirk sehen, wo die Griffiths geheiratet haben und Adele Gareth ins Leben zurückgeholt hat ;))). Die letzten Zeilen waren schon sehr traurig (The King of Ash) und ich fragte mich, ob Gareth da noch einmal die Kurve kriegen würde, ob es ihm wirklich reichen würde Adele zu beschützen (wo sie seinen Schutz gar nicht mehr so nötig wie früher hatte). Die leere Burg vervollständigte das depressive Bild. Und Katerina zufolge war Gareth früher auch mehr der depressive, melancholische Typ. Aber Adele rettet die Stimmung letztendlich mit einem Vorschlag, der das Werk der Griffiths in die heutige Zeit katapultiert und in meine Hände legt. Und da ich das Buch gerade gelesen habe, muss es funktioniert haben - Gareth hat es tatsächlich getan!!! :))) Das Ende ist für mich abgerundet und lässt mich zufrieden zurück. Ich kann doch glücklich von meinen geliebten Helden Abschied nehmen. Nicht lange - ich muss es heute gleich noch einmal lesen, um die schönsten Textstellen zu markieren. In der ganzen Aufregung ging das diesmal völlig unter ...

Der Schluss der Trilogie hat ein abgerundetes und passendes Ende, die Geschichte ist voller Action und spannend wie die Vorgängerbücher.Die equatorianische Armee unter General Mehmet Anhalt befindet sich auf dem grossen Kriegszug gegen die Vampire und belagert Grenoble im ehemaligen Frankreich. Allerdings stellt sich heraus, dass die Vampire mächtiger und besser organisiert sind als erwartet. Obwohl Greyfriar mit Adele's Truppen kämpft, sieht es so aus, dass der Gegner sie vernichten wird, bereits sind viele Soldaten gefallen. In letzter Minute kommt ihnen Kaiserin Adele zu Hilfe und tötet die Vampire mit Hilfe ihrer magischen Kräfte. Allerdings zu einem hohen Preis, sie wird dadurch sehr geschwächt und kann ihre Kräfte nicht ungehindert einsetzen.Zurück in Alexandria muss Adele feststellen, dass sie Feinde unter ihren nächsten Verbündeten hat. Die Identität des Greyfriar ist bereits vielen bekannt, sie bedroht die Herrschaft der Kaiserin. Um ihre Leute zu retten, müssen Adele und Greyfriar zu verzweifelten Mitteln greifen, ihr Bruder Simon steht im Mittelpunkt ihrer Strategie um die Krone von England.Die Geschichte ist so spannend geschrieben, dass ich kaum das Ende erwarten konnte. Einen Punkt Abzug, weil mir gewisse Charaktere und Handlungen zu weit gehen, für mich kaum nachvollziehbar sind. Die extreme und plötzliche Macht von Adele, woher weiss Mamoru so viel und niemand stoppt ihn, wieso gibt sich die Tante so lange nicht zu erkennen, wieso konnten sich die Vampire innert 150 Jahre so vermehren, die Motivation des Kriegsministers ist mir zu lau- schliesslich geht es ums Überleben der Rasse. Leider findet hier keine Charakterentwicklung mehr statt, die Beziehungsebene wird kaum ausgebaut.Aber sehr empfehlenswert und faszinierend. Da es ein paar lose Enden hat, erwarte ich (vielleicht?) eine weitere Trilogie.

Wow... Oh my goodness. the events that went on in this story,yikes, not sure if wanted to go on reading it. but as l continued with the book, the story had a lot of twists and turns. It.kept you at the edge of your seat.Had to put the book down for a while, and go.... Oh S#%*@#T,,,,
