Buy this to help yourself realize you don't need it.
Before I share my cautionary tale, this is a 5-star product because it functions exactly as described. It is durable and easy to use. I have not needed to change the batteries in the 2 years that I've had it. This is the only timed safe I have owned, so I don't have any point of reference in terms of the relative functionality and affordability of similar items, but I was willing to pay $80 for this and got what I was expecting. With that said, before buying this box, I think you should give careful consideration to the following two questions: 1. Whatever it is that you imagine putting inside it, are you better off having it in this box on a timer, or are you better off simply not having it in your house at all? 2. When the box unlocks, what are you going to do with the items inside? I bought this because I enjoy drinking—a little too much—and it was becoming a problem. Specifically, I have trouble stopping when I start. I didn't want to stop drinking completely (because drinking is fun), so I figured I could use this box to lock up my liquor for the week, have it unlock on Friday afternoon, and measure out how much I wanted to allow myself to drink for the night before locking it back up (until Saturday evening or whatever). The XL size is large enough to fit most 1.75L bottles of liquor, which is just about the only thing I have ever put inside it. At first, this approach was working pretty well. Locking the bottle up felt like a commitment to staying sober until it opened, so I was less inclined to buy drinks during the week in a moment of weakness. As much as I wanted to drink more after having what I had measured out, my "past self" wouldn't let me, and I wasn't in a position to argue. Here's the problem: I didn't need this box; I needed self-discipline. Putting things you buy into this box so that you can't use them is a sense of self-discipline, but it's a crippled one. Eventually, the strategy I described above broke down because it gave the alcohol too much power. Locking it up until Friday built up anticipation, and as soon as the box unlocked, the urge to drink had control over me until I exerted the willpower to lock it back up, which I didn't always have. One month ago, I decided I was tired of letting alcohol control me, and I have been sober since. I'm committed to going at least 90 days, which is how long I've heard it takes the cardiovascular system to recover from alcohol abuse, but I set this time period somewhat arbitrarily. And no, I'm not going to buy a bottle and put it in this box at 80 days. (The maximum lock-up duration is 10 days.) All I know is that I'm not going to allow alcohol in my house until I can control myself well enough to not need to lock it in this box, even for the evening. And maybe that day will never come. In either case, I may never use this box again. So, take my story for what it's worth to you. As an aside, I think it is very strange that "Quit Smoking" is in the title of this product. If you want to *quit* smoking, why would you lock them in a timed safe instead of just getting rid of them? Get a nicotine patch if that's the concern.

Well-designed, Well-made, and incredibly useful
Really impressed with this product. Provides 'will-power' in a way that really works. Useful for managing habits that might otherwise get out of control. Some of the reviews are a bit inaccurate: -The instructions say not to use it in a refrigerator. I guess moisture could condense and interfere with components or battery contacts. If whatever you're craving needs to be kept cold, you can certainly lock it in something, refrigerate or freeze that locked container, then keep the key to the container in the Kitchen Safe. -If you lock something inside your Kitchen Safe but need to get it out before the timer will allow, you can certainly use tools to break into the base. You'll have to buy a new base. XL base is available from Amazon. Other bases available from TheKitchenSafe.com -If you want to keep it locked for longer than 10 days, you can easily extend the time, while it is still locked, up to a maximum of 10 days. -Batteries last a long time. If the batteries die, the device will remain locked. When you replace the batteries the countdown will continue. The base of the unit I received had a very slight scoring. Wasn't cracked, or weakened, but it looked like it had been stressed when released from the mold used to make it. I took some pictures, and emailed the manufacturer via their website. Got an email back within an hour, asking for my address. Had a replacement base, in perfect condition, 2 days later, free of charge. (Though ground shipping was used, I'm about 60 miles from where the base was shipped from. Your actual time, in a similar situation, might be longer.) Excellent product. Outstanding service.

Easy to use, start with short times
This product works great. There's no way to break into it once you set the time and no way to reduce the time once you set it. You CAN add additional time after it's already been set though. I recommend starting with little amounts of time and building up as you see fit. I only use this for my cell phone. I use it to have tech-free days with my kids or on nights I can't sleep so that it's not the culprit of keeping me awake even later. The first time I used it I set it to 11pm to 11am the next day. It was a successful experiment in seeing how horribly addicted I am to my phone. One day I used it for 6 hours (9am to 3pm) and I forgot I picked up a work shift for that night starting at 3:45PM. In both cases, I wish I had only set the time for 3 hours. I've learned that I like it best when I set it in 1 hour increments. I get so much more house cleaning done while I have it locked away; I can check it once every hour for anything important and then lock it back up. Locking it up removes the temptation of "Oh, I'm JUST going to check if I got a text from so-and-so.....Oh I have an email....." Then it's down the rabbit hole of answering 5 emails, unsubscribing from marketing emails, getting a reminder for a library book that's due, someone just liked my picture on instagram, OMG I can't believe she took that picture, who is she dating now anyways? Whoa, what's this cool business she started, ooooo makeup, I love makeup, OMG there's a Buy 2 shades of lip color and get 1 free, what shades look best one me? ...... and on and on and on, it never ends. This product is a great amputation of our external organ, the cellular telephone. I shall now lock my phone away now because I just spent 15 minutes writing a review on Amazon. This is me living my best life.

Crush your bad habits!
Love this lockbox. It has helped me cut back on vaping, mindless scrolling on my phone, and late night snacking. Also great for medication management if youre in recovery like me! I would give it five stars if it was freezer/refrigerator safe!

The Best, and The Worst
This safe is the bane of my existence and a lifesaver all in one. It’s been really difficult to lessen my weed intake and have always said something like this would help. I’m extremely pleased with it. The safe fits all my weed stuff (including 11” bong). All I have to do is put my stuff in, do a little mental math, and voila! I don’t have to worry about smoking for hours/days/weeks. Very happy with this. May bedazzle the outside since it is opaque.

Perfect tool to wean yourself off devices!
Easy to use, helps me have focused work and not using my phone after 9 PM. Very roomy and sturdy, batteries last forever. Just bought an extra one for my girlfriend.

Chintzy
Very cool premise that undoubtedly works. It’s great that this thing exists because it really does seem to help people get a handle on their addictions & improve quality of lives. Kudos for that! As far as the product itself, it does manage to be functional at doing what it does. You can set the timer & the lid will lock, countdown, unlock, and so forth. It just does not feel to me like a production-quality item. The overwhelming impression of the thing is plastic, plastic, plastic. Not particularly sturdy plastic either. It feels brittle, like a fall on tile would shatter it pretty easily (maybe not so, but that is the impression the item gives me). The time-setting knob feels wobbly and just… kinda junky. As far as I can tell the only way to set the time is by spinning it to incrementally add time in minutes; there is no way to skip it ahead by hours or days. Which means if you want to lock something up for the full 10 days you have to spin & spin & spin the thing for an age and a half (not really, like 10-15 seconds or something, but it is without question a cumbersome & inelegant design), and if you happen to need to use it exclusively for 10 day blocks of time then this spinny thing will be incurring an awful lot of wear & tear — seems like a very likely point for premature failure. Like they couldn’t just put some freaking buttons on there? There are digital locking padlocks a tenth the size of this thing that have managed to figure it out. Let’s talk next about the locking tabs that extend from the lid into corresponding slots in the base to lock the two pieces together. There are four slots, and only two tabs. What?! Why!!?!?! The result is that when you pull on the lid while locked there is quite a bit of play (maybe 1/8”) on the tabless sides, making the thing feel very flimsy & insecure. (Not to mention all the reviews mentioning how easy it is to break into.) If it had the two additional tabs the entire product would feel dramatically more secure; I can’t think of any good reason to exclude them other than blatant cost-cutting. And at this price point? How much money do you creeps really need to rake in on top of what must be the astronomical markup on this chintzy-feeling toy? And speaking of toys, that’s exactly what it sounds like when you engage the lock — the whirring sound the motor makes when it extends the tabs reminds me of a cheap kid's windup toy. The sound it makes is verrry similar. Wonder how long THAT mechanism is going to hold up? (Not to mention all the reviews saying the tabs stopped extending/retracting after a few months.) Ksafe looking better & better by the minute, eh? What about the fact that it can be broken so easily? Reviews mention children bypassing the locking tabs in minutes, junkies simply smashing them with a hammer, and so on. The product justifies it by billing itself as being a supplement to willpower rather than a replacement for it — but why can’t it be a more effective supplement? No one is expecting the thing to be Fort Knox, but if you were willing to cut into your profit margin a little bit more there is certainly room for improvement. (Let’s not talk about the reviewer who mentions purchasing this product a total of SIX TIMES after intentionally breaking one after another to access the contents, before finally concluding it probably wasn’t the right product for him. Such outcomes couldn’t be a contributing factor to its ease of breakability, no, surely not. Capitalists are no fans of disposability! Haha…ha) Everything about this product is low-effort. It looks like they took an absolutely barebones prototype using the cheapest possible components, got it just to the point of passable polish & functionality, and then released it as a finished product. How long ago was that I wonder? I don’t keep up with fads & trends all that much, so I went and looked up when this thing aired on Shark Tank — it was in 2014. … ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?! This thing is EIGHT YEARS OLD and the design is still THIS flimsy & THIS inadequate? My god. My. God. Not only that, if you check the episode on YouTube the design has not changed at all. The thing still looks identical. I-DEN-TI-CAL ! Whatever ksafe is or is not, I think we can all agree that it is nowhere in the ballpark of a “rest-on-your-laurels” degree of refinement. You cannot seriously tell me there isn’t one single change or improvement they could have rolled out in all that time? People, whatever benefit this item does or does not offer to you & your quality of life… YOU SHOULD NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. You should not be complicit in supporting such a low-ethics organization that is clearly only concerned with profit. They have a fantastic premise here, and they are offering it in the cheapest & most garbagey form possible, at what is most likely a hugely inflated price, and doing nothing whatsoever to refine or improve the product 8 years later. Just raking in the cash on autopilot. Even putting ethics to the side entirely, this thing is simply not worth the money they are charging for it, and honestly that was my initial impression when I found it. It was like, “Seventy bucks… for THAT?” But I was interested in the premise & ksafe dominates the search results for timed lock boxes, so I made the purchase, and my initial assessment has been vindicated in every possible way, and here we are. I really have a hard time understanding how ksafe can be the flagship product in this genre. It’s just so subpar! So underwhelming! You would think there would be a million other knockoff contenders like with every single other product in existence on Amazon. Even so, there are still FAR BETTER OPTIONS available, people. PLEASE look into them. The timed locking box by vendor Mindsight is larger, much more attractive, has controls that aren’t stupid, multiple different lockout modes, and can be set for up to 30 days. AND it’s $20 less. Those people actually have some kind of an ethos and have put some thought into creating a product that supports & upholds it. And it’s $20 less!!! You don’t even have to pay to have a clear conscious like with ethically sourced food & whatnot. Your hard earned dollars are worth more than this (or any other) low-effort product. Please do some research & choose quality products that have some thought put into them & are intended to last. Ksafe is going back.
