Incredible value for a powerful and reliable generator
We bought this generator about two years ago, after Hurricane Sandy tore through our area and left us without power for 2 weeks. That had actually been the 3rd time in about 12 months that we had no power for a week or more. We had gotten our hands on a small generator sometime in the middle of those ordeals, but after Sandy the wife said "get the biggest one you can find!" Like others, I was a bit skeptical about this generator for a few reasons... the lesser-known brand (at least to me), the foreign origin, and simply - it seemed too inexpensive to be as good as it claimed! Boy am I glad that I put aside those concerns and just ordered it. At the time we ordered it, the price was about $1100 - still well worth it in my opinion. It came via freight and the delivery company was very accommodating about working out a delivery time with us. It was very well packed. This is one seriously heavy item, but as long as you have a little space, you can wiggle it around to get it unpacked by yourself. I know a few other reviewers had theirs ship with a dead battery, but mine was ok. It was a little tricky to hook up actually, but I eventually got it connected. It comes with the feet and wheels separate, so you need to install them yourself. It's pretty easy, but a socket wrench set or racheting wrench set will come in handy. Mine appeared to be empty so I added oil before using it. There was no sign of any leaked oil inside the package like some others have reported. To turn on the generator, you open the fuel valve, pull the choke, and turn the key. It's really pretty easy. There is also a pull starter if you are having battery issues. Once you turn it on, there's a circuit breaker to control whether the outlets are live or not. Our electrician advised me to connect the generator to the house first, then turn on the circuit breaker on the generator, then gradually turn on breakers inside the house after flipping the transfer switch to slowly ramp up the load. There is also an idle control switch - which looks like it was re-labelled "auto throttle" in the pictures here. It basically causes the generator to idle at a much lower (and quieter) speed when you turn it on. It's good for testing and other times when you don't need the noise. There is a pretty big variety of outlets on the panel too - 50A, two different 30A, and two 20A. There is also DC12v available. We use the 50A now when we hook it up to the house, but before we had the transfer switch installed we got plenty of juice out of the 20A with a few long extension cords. With the 50A connection to our panel via a transfer switch, our electrician told us "this will pretty much run everything in your house". And it does - it'll run all the lights, TV's, computers, 2 fridges, microwave, coffee maker and yes - even the central air. Just for full disclosure - we have a gas stove, and I haven't had the nerve to run the washer/dryer on generator power. Also - we've not had to use it during a real heatwave yet, so I suppose the load from the AC was never at its peak. Still, there is no shortage of power coming out of this unit. Plus - I was surprised when I realized that this unit is considerably quieter than our previous much smaller generator! Don't get me wrong, it's still loud - they all are - but not the kind of loud I expected from something outputting this much power. Two years later, it still runs great - starts every time with just a quick turn of the key, even after a long stretch. I try to make it a point to start it every few months to cycle out any old gas, and keep things loose. Once I ran it in the back yard for a few hours just to power my mitre saw and table saw while I built a small shed - it didn't even blink. I also found that under a medium load, it gets a very decent runtime out of a single tank of gas - in some cases up to 10 hours or more. Hopefully this helps your decision if you're at all hesitant to try this brand. If what you want is a spectacular value for a very powerful portable generator, this absolutely fits the bill. I ordered the same unit for my in-laws who live across town and their experience has been just as good.

Excellent Generator
I rely heavily on product reviews so I try to remember to enter reviews on major and specialty items whether they are good or bad. I read the reviews on the DuroMax and there were only minor or zero complaints and mostly favorable reviews. I received my generator a few days ago. Nicely packed with strong protective foam protecting the receptacle panel. The package had gotten banged on that side but the foam fully protected the panel. The unit was pristine. Easy assembly of the wheels, stationary supports, handles and battery connection. The unit is dry so you must add 1.1 quarts of oil and some gasoline. I very slowly extended the pull start cord to get some oil on the internals and the engine started in the middle of the second pull! IMPORTANT: The user manual does not indicate anything about a break-in run. I called the manufacturer and of course they do want a break-in program. They recommended 4 hours at full speed no electrical load, then 4 more hours with a light load and then drain out the break-in oil and replace. Most competitor sites recommend more hours for break-in. I did 4 hours no load, randomly letting it idle for 5 to 20 minutes. 3 hours at 500 watts (5% load), 1 hour 600 watts, 2 hours 1000 watts (10%) and 2 hours 1600 watts (16%). Varying the speeds and loads is a good idea for piston engines. Then I tested it on my 2.3 KW well motor which has about a 6 KW surge lasting about 2 tenths of a second. No problem at all. The generator didn't blink. I ran it half a minute at 5.5 KW (55% of max rating) - no problem. I also ran it with 3.2 KW base load (2 hair dryers) and then added the well pump with its surge (9.2 KW with the surge load) no problem. I also let the unit idle and then automatically throttle up after introducing the 6 KW surge - no problem taking the load at idle and powering up. The auto idle is a nice feature. The voltage meter matched my digital voltmeter just as an accuracy check. They provide 3 and 4 prong twist plugs, 12 volt insert leads for charging a car battery and a small toolkit. The key falls out in the "off" position so just tie-wrap it to the frame so you do not lose it. tape the extra key to the frame also. Other items they do not mention: a nice functional fuel tank gauge. My home is just under 5000 feet elevation so the engine is suffering a 17% power penalty, plus it is 90 degrees and very humid today which hurts even more but as I indicated above the 16 HP engine is a beauty. I also put a light charge on their battery and it was in excellent shape - half an amp for about 30 minutes and it was at 100%. Electric starter is strong. There is also a charge indicator to let you know the unit's battery is being charged after starting. I love the airless tires - we have huge mesquite thorns here that puncture large backhoe tires - honest injun. Tomorrow I will try it on my 3 ton heat pump - I bet it does it. Remember to take the trouble to break it in and change the oil. Nice unit.

Hurricane Irma 2017 - South Florida
Great investment as an emergency power supply to sustain your home and family during extended power outages. I direct-connect this to my home's power using an interlock switch. I maintain the battery all year round by connecting a trickle charger to it while stored in my garage. UPDATE: Hurricane Irma 2017 As of this report, I am currently using the generator to power my house during Hurricane Irma. I left my central AC, water tank heater, washer/dryer & food disposal and the stove off. It powered every room and appliance in the home. I purchased a stand-up AC unit for this emergency and that generator also powered this unit as well with no issues. As of this report, it has been continuously running for over six hours. SECOND UPDATE I have now been running this beast for about 35 hours continuous only turning it off to top-off the tank with gasoline and to add more 10W-30 (Full Synthetic) oil. This morning I tested this unit by turning on our central air conditioning - NO ISSUES!! Adding to this, I also hooked up my neighbor's freezer and another neighbor's fridge and a stand-up fan. All while, I am operating lights, fans, appliances in my house! The only things I did not turn on are my washer/dryer, food disposal, water heater, and electric stove and oven. I used my propane grill and microwave for cooking. I also charged my laptops on generator power - but only ensuring that they were plugged into a decent surge protector. I fully understand that I am being reckless on that one, but so far, no issues with our laptops (knock on wood). Also, at this higher load, a full tank gives me about 8 -9 hours of power - but this is just an estimate as I never allowed it to run empty during this timeframe. I believe I ran for 7 hours at high load and it consumed about 5 gallons at that point. Additionally, not sure if it makes a difference but I've been using premium gasoline during this emergency. So far, I am very happy with this unit's performance under real-world conditions and the excellent price-point value. I highly recommend this unit to power your dwelling during prolonged outages. THIRD UPDATE: Total continuous run-time during Hurricane Irma was 77 hours!! Stopping only to top-off the 8.3-gallon tank and to add more 10W-30 oil during the first 24 hours. I believe I even accidentally overfilled that oil reservoir. Not taking any chances during this hurricane, I used full synthetic Royal Purple. Again, this beast was a huge savior for us!! Strongly recommended.

Good generator but took some time to figure it out!
1st off I want to tell you that it is HEAVY! Need two MEN to get it off the truck. Had to attach my wheels and handles on it which took about 30 min if u dont have a clue on how to do it like myself. It came With a 20amp, 30amp, and a 50 amp twist lock plug. However, I am using the 50 amp receptacle off of the generator and the generator does not have a 50 Amp twist lock RECPTACLE ON IT! So its worthless because homedepot or lowes does not sell a 50 amp twist lock receptacle! I know because i went to both and they said they on carry 30 amp twist lock receptacles! So I already wired it up myself "a home ran three 6 gauge wire, and a #10 ground through a 3/4 inch nm liquid tight flex. 15' of it to be exact. Because i already had 6 gauge wire and was too cheap to pay for the 25' 4 wire cord which is being sold for close to 200 bucks that you need to use this thing which has no cords to come with it.So i wasted my time placing that 50amp twist lock on my cord and had to rewire to to a regular 4 wired plug for the receptacle. It does not tell you how long to or what you should look for into recharging the battery. it just give you plugs to place on it. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CHARGE UP GUYS? The instructions are horrible. The book says to open the fuel gauge by turning to the right, but the picture on the unit says turn it straight up. So i go by the book and turn it to the right, poured gas in it and it started up on the 1st pull! so i was like good! till it died in 5 mins. Then i turned it to the top position and it started. But the good news is that it works. I had all my lights working, my dryer, my 10,000 btu ac unit, my computer, my surround sound system and my 65" tv and cable boxes were all working! I WILL NEVER BE CAUGHT OUT IN THE HEAT OR COLD AND DARKNESS AGAIN! It ran my refridge as well. But I didnt run my dryer at the same time as the others not risking to overload my unit. Then I turned off everything and tried to run my house ac unit and NO HAPS! Good thing I have this 10,000 ac unit and portable heaters. But all in all, it works. Oh yeah. Kind of loud. Not too loud, but loud. Loud as a gasoline lawnmower that costantly keeps running, but its a motor, what do you expect?

Generator Great, Shipper not good, but AMAZON AMAZING!
Delivery was scheduled between 11 and 2. At 1:15 I called Amazon to find out if there was a problem. Initially, I thought the delivery was between 11 and 1. I was wrong. However, I did find out that the ABF driver was 1.5 hours behind. Megan from Amazon customer service actually called me back at 2 to see if the driver was there! He was not yet. I asked my 80 year old mother-in-law to sign for the package and went to pick up a grounding rod at the hardware store and other items to prepare for the generator. I left at 2:30 and returned at 3:30. Evidently the driver had made up some time, because he had shown up at 3 PM. The driver’s statement to Mom was that “there was supposed to be an adult present for delivery,” and that he “would have to reschedule the delivery because if I do it by myself I’ll hurt my back.” A neighbor (another 80 year old) offered to help, and they unloaded the generator and placed it on the carport, so no need to reschedule. However, the instructions when ordering this item did not state that the recipient would have to help unload. I can’t imagine Lowe’s showing up with a new freezer and asking the customer to “grab an end and we’ll drag it up the steps.” Amazon, amazingly, investigated and determined that indeed the shipper was at fault, but still offered a promotion rebate for my troubles. (They are great!) The generator itself is outstanding. It took me a couple of hours to install the wheel kit (comes with the genny), service the oil (does NOT come with genny), hook up the battery lead on the negative side (battery tested at 11.9 VDC) and put fuel in the machine. The starter cranked and immediately the generator sprang to life. The recharging light was on for about 5 minutes and extinguished, and all receptacles tested properly with my digital voltmeter. What a great buy. The instructions are adequate, and I am looking forward to my next power failure. Considering that I ordered this during a forced-hotel stay as a result of one of this year’s Maryland ice storms, it was here in 5 days and operational a week after I ordered it. Excellent deal, great machine, superb Amazon service! Considering all of this, I would most certainly order another one if I needed it. Good luck!

Bad Motor(s) DO NOT BUY
Very, Very disappointed with this purchase and this product. I purchased my first unit in February of this year. It ran fine for the first 2 weekends - however I did notice that the clocks in the camper would not keep correct time. This means that the generator does not produce a constant 60 Hz. On the 3rd weekend out the unit stopped in the middle of the night. I could not get it to re-start. I ended up taking it to my local small motor repair place here. They evaluated it and told me it had thrown a rod and the valves we in horrible shape. I researched my options of getting parts from Max Tools and having the motor rebuilt. In the meantime - I purchased another unit, as this is my only source of power at the camp ground right now. We paid special attention to the required maintenance of the unit per Max Tool. We changed the oil every 20 hours as they told us too. I was really shocked when the new unit went down with only 82 working hours on it. I took this unit in to my local shop and again - same thing... Thrown rod and valve issues. My reapir guy told me the motors on these units are sub par at best. This unit also could not keep the clocks working at the correct time. So, I can only imagine that the stator side of these units is sub par as well. So, now I have 2 units that don't run, I'm really not wanting to get parts from Max Tools and pay my guy his shop rate to repair the units - just to have this happen again in less than 100 hours of run time. Very, Very disappointed.... I'll take the loss. DO NOT BUY THIS UNIT, unless you only need a few days of run time..... Brian Hill

Best Value. Powers my whole house including 2.5 ton AC
Living in Florida through 5 days of no power from Irma, I never wanted to be without power again. Debated and researched purchasing a smalller unit, to use with extension cords and a window AC unit, then found the DuroMax XP10000E for $699 here. I got a deal., and it was cheaper than buying a smaller unit plus a window AC unit. The wattage, and 50amp 240V output are enough to power my 1500 sq ft house, including the 2.5 ton AC unit, computers, tv, stereo, refrigerator and every light in the house. My electrical engineer who installed a transfer switch and receptacle on the outside of my garage was skeptical of my consumption calculations, warning that if my AC unit was one that powered up in 10 seconds it might be too much of a draw; if the AC took 30 secs to power up, then it might work. Once we hooked it up, it worked like a champ! The lights do flicker a bit when the AC recycles back on, but I can deal with that. Sensitive electronics are protected with UPS. I've kept the hot water off, but if I need that I can always turn off the AC for an hour. And I haven't tried the oven; I only use that a few times a year anyways and can do without it. I've only run the Duramax for 30-45 minutes, but am very satisfied. Thrilled to know I'll be comfortable while others are in the dark next time. The 3-year warranty gives confidence, too. Mine was delivered within a few days in perfect shape with none of the issues other reviewers have mentioned.

48 Hours Straight in High Heat
The power just came on here in Huron/Flat Rock Michigan after being out for 48 hrs. This was the first real test of this DuroMax 10,000 watt Electric Start Generator. The most it ever ran prior to this was about 6Hrs. I must say it ran Excellent!!! I ran my home pretty much as I always do with the exception of not running certain things. (while the central air was running.) (Hair Dryer, Microwave and toaster) Although I did run the most important things which was my freezer, refrig and my Central Air Conditioning. I also ran my lights like we normally would (All Compact Fluorescent) which normally run a 100 watt bulb at 21 watts, 60 at 14 watts, etc... The only time I had a problem is when I wasn't thinking and tried to make toast while the central air was running and it kicked out the Breaker on the generator, as it should have. All I had to do was go out and turn the breaker on and all power was restored. Using a PIII Watt Meter showed a toaster running 1400 wattsto live our lives like we normally do without major inconveniences. This Generator is definitely worth the $1000.00 price tag for peace of mind. The one thing I would recommend a Reliance Controls MB125 Indoor 50-Amp Meter Box showing how many watts a person is using while running the generator.. One thing I did do was run a high output 20" floor fan on the generator head itself due to the heat here being in the mid to high 90's with high humidity and being ran in the garage with the overhead door open. I must say that DuroMax, for being a China made product did One Outstanding Job. I am thoroughly impressed and after this, I Highly Recommend this Generator. My home is 2500sq feet and we was able run everything we normally use without any inconvienence. Even the Washer and Dryer. The only thing that I made sure was done was that when we left one room to go to another, we shut the lights out. Other than that, it was life as usual in our house while the rest of the city was powerless.
