Fun Book!
We're big Daniel Pinkwater fans in the house. My husband read this one as a child, and we picked it up this summer so my son could read it (age 7). It's ridiculously silly, full of adventure, and was up to the usual Pinkwater standards.I only gave it 4 stars because my favorite Daniel Pinkwater (written under the name D. Manus Pinkwater) was Lizard Music and in my opinion, nothing ever could top that!

The Hoboken Chicken Emergency by Daniel Pinkwater
I read this book and thought it was funny and childish. I asked my husband to read it to our girls, who were 7 and 9 at the time, as part of the bedtime routine. My husband put alot of inflection into reading aloud. It was great to hear the laughter from all 3 of them. I found the book again and bought it again. My oldest is 15 and can not wait to read it again. She has to clean her room first. She is busy cleaning.

My kids loved it as much as I did
Exceptionally silly and subversive, I loved reading this book to my kids and cracking up over the antics of Dirty Louise and the cast of characters hunting her down. Fantastic!

Fun book!
My children (11, 5 and 3) loved reading it. I grew up watching the movie and knew they would enjoy it. The book gets a little strange towards the end, but they still thought it was funny.

Why shouldn't parents enjoy kids books!
Funny for young and old alike. The surreal story of Thanksgiving and a child's pet. " every boy should have a chicken."

As an adult reader of the better sort of children's books
I've read a couple of Pinkwater books. They are intended for young readers and while not exceptional have decent plots and fanciful premises but are simple enough for the intended age range to read alone. In this case a boy sent out for a Thanksgiving turkey finds the only fowl left in Hoboken, New Jersey, belongs to a mad scientist with a penchant for engineering ostrich-sized chickens. The story moves along simply and lively and shows some realistic appreciation for the problems of giant chicken fanciers.Pinkwater has many devoted fans who read them as children and possibly to their own children. As an adult reader of the better sort of children's books, I approve it for children, namely, find it readable myself. As I always say, never give a child a book you would not re-read yourself. This is especially true of books for small children, some of which are horrible. If you can't read them 100 times without some enjoyment you are only hurting yourself should your child like bad writing.
