Method in Ministry: Theological Reflection and Christian Ministry (revised)

This is a very useful book which was introduced to us in one of our final theology classes for a graduate degree program. The information is very practical and down to earth as the Whiteheads explain how to engage in a theological reflection to be used in one's ministry. It is a very step by step method which, once figured out, is quite useful. Though I don't think I would have understood it as well earlier in my theology program, the skills presented by the Whiteheads would have been nice to have. From the first day in that program, when I was told to write a theological reflection, I was not totally sure if what I wrote was ever in the ballpark for what the instructors wanted. The Whiteheads' method would have structured my thinking much better in all of those reflections. For now, it will be useful for use in real life.

A good read, but a superior study. What is lacking in many ministries is the development of experience as well as theology. I was assigned to review this book by our RCIA director. My recommendation is to provide it for each member of the team. This book provides a METHOD of practicing ministry that is inclusive of the community, your personal experience, and tradition rather than simply a "preaching" from above. Each chapter is like a different course of a grand banquet; different texture, taste, and purpose. It deserves your finest wine. Bring the commitment of your very blood and be strengthened. By desert, you are ready to seek out a ministry for yourself.
