Reflections on a Gift of Watermelon Pickle

My First Poetry Book
I was in elementary school back in the 70's when I first purchased this book through the Scholastic Book order. I have enjoyed writing and reading poetry throughout my life, and this book started it all for me. Each poets contributions in their own self expression was so inspiring as a young person learning how to find their own voice. Some written in very few sentences with still making a bold statement, some just very simple to make you ponder. This is still a great poetry book today and glad to have it back on my book shelf.

Great Service
The vendor took measures to provide additional protection to the book in transport. Purchased an older book for a book lover, so the aged book scent made it a much more enjoyable gift for them. Would order from this vendor again!

Always a delighful time reading these poems
The book arrived promptly and in good condition, as described. I love this little book of poetry. I've had my own copy since the 70's, and I needed a backup just in case. The poems are clever, some are funny, and all have rich meaning. They are easy to memorize, and I remember the ones I memorized from the 70's. A very good book of poems for young children who are mesmerized when someone recites them from memory, especially in the dark. And really impressed when I recite "Crossing" by Philip Booth (filled with the sound of a train passing by at a railroad crossing) while trains stop traffic. When they begin to read for themselves they have fun with the sound of language beautifully constructed. The collection contains some of our most treasured poets (Langston Hughes, Theodore Rhoethke, William Carlos Willeams, Carl Sandburg).

Appropriate for many age groups! I love it now as much as I did in 7th grade (1967)!
My home schooled grandsons ( ages 14, 12, and 8) have "Tea Time Tuesdays with Pastries and Poetry" and I thought this would be the perfect book to use. They have to choose a poem, read it, and then discuss it. There are many poems that will interest boys as well as be appropriate for their grade levels.I am also using this as a multiple learning opportunity. We will have a proper British high tea with tablecloth, napkins, great-grandmother's China, etc. The boys will have a cooking lesson to prepare the goodies, as well as etiquette lesson in proper table manners!

This book has stood the test of time.
I had this book as a teenager and loved it. I bought it as a Christmas gift for my teenaged granddaughter. She is getting into poetry and enjoys it almost as much as I did.

Reflections on a gift of Modern Verse, Received 50 years ago from a friend named Nostalgia
I acquired this in paperback in high school, some 50 years ago now, and many of the poems have never left my head. Rather than waxing Nostalgic (she's already smooth enough), I will simply add that these gems and accompanying photos are as relevant to young readers (like myself) as they ever were, and now as then will serve as introductions to the likes of Langston Hughes and Ezra Pound.A shout-out to Amazon: last time I saw a hardback copy was a hole in the wall bookshop in the Old City of Jerusalem, ca. 1986. Bought it for my trekking companion, both back from the Sinai. We lose a bit by not keeping such titles in our heads as excuses to search such places (Steinbeck called this 'vacillar'), but it is nice to satisfy the itch with the scratch.
