Are the pads removable? I only need padding on the outside part of the ankle

No, it is a gel like pad and is permanent to each side. I only need it on the outside as well but it is comfortable enough that is does not matter. Hope this helps

One size fits most, but my mother has a large foot and swelling in her legs due to a heart condition and it works well for her.

They are made symmetrically, they have silicone inserts equally on both sides. It doesn't matter if they are worn on the right or left foot.
