Dog Story with Soul
This is a great book for anyone who loves dogs or wolves. It speaks to the ancient feelings in the soul of man that we all know are there. Great reading for adults too!

Beautiful story about young boy who wants to return to his native roots
Lovely story, that teaches the reader a lot about life and Native American traditions in the Arctic regions. Easy to read, as it is intended as a book for young adults, but it is powerful in its simplicity. I particularly enjoyed the development of the relationship between Russel and his sled dogs. The dogs were an important part of Russel's search for his native roots, and his maturity into adulthood. I would definitely recommend this read to anyone who is interested in learning about other cultures.

Inappropriate for a read-aloud book
I bought Dogsong hoping to repeat the wonderful read-aloud experience that my grandchildren and I had with Hatchet. (They are 7 and 9 years old.) When the book arrived I read it through first for myself. Unfortunately I can't imagine reading it to my grandkids, for two reasons. The first reason is a quibble. One of my favorite things about Hatchet was its realism. Gary Paulsen was able to make my grandsons imagine, step by step, what it would feel like to be lost in the wilderness with only an axe. In contrast, Dogsong annoyed me right off the bat because its setup was not realistic. Oogruk just happened to have a full team of dogs and a working sled even though he hadn't driven them in years? That's a lot of feeding (for the dogs) and maintenance (for the sled). Moreover, the dogs were still in their prime and ready to run? None of this made sense. The second reason is the pregnancy subplot toward the end of the book. Russel rescues a young Inuit woman who has been kicked out of her village because she is pregnant out of wedlock. Although he saves her life, she goes into premature labor and delivers a stillborn baby. This means that if I read the book to my grandsons I would have to explain accidental pregnancies and stillbirth. I don't want to explore either of these topics with them at their age. This subplot reminded me of the one thing I didn't like about Hatchet: the big Secret that Brian carried with him to Canada. Brian had found out that his mother was having an affair when he saw her kissing another man in her (his?) car. Brian was obsessed with his Secret, and my grandkids and I had to hear about it over and over again. We got pretty sick of it. But my grandkids already know about divorce (thankfully, not first-hand), so this was more of an annoyance than anything else. The pregnancy subplot is much worse.I did enjoy Brian's 'journey,' both literal and metaphorical. It was wonderful how he learned to work with the dogs and survive in the wilderness. But for me that wasn't enough to overcome the book's two weaknesses.

Mush your sled dogs to your nearest bookstore and put this book in the hands of a kid!!
I am a reading specialist in a k-8 school. As such, I work with students, especially boys, for whom selecting the right book can make the difference in whether they find reading a joy or a drudge. From page one, this classic mesmerized my students....so much so that they researched dog sledding in our New Hampshire town and have spearheaded an onsite visit from a local dogsled team. Now they are their class heroes! How much more powerful need a book be?!!!

A wonderful book. I sent this copy out to a school on the Pine Ridge Reservation. I have found Paulsen's books are an excellent way to get boys interested in reading. He is a writer that paint beautiful word pictures. Makes you feel like you're there.

Gary Paulsen encapsulates even my imagination despite being in my mid 30βs
Easy read, but such an imaginative book despite being closely based on true events.
