Great book
I am almost 78 years old. I was a very small boy at the time of the flag raising. I can’t be sure when the event came into my consciousness, but when it did it has been there ever since. This book, by one of the raisers’ sons, brought everything into focus. It shows how amazing it was that a small group of men with completely different backgrounds came together to help create one of the great visual sights of World War II. The book is written such that you are on the island with these men and in their later lives. It also says that the real heroes of Iwo Jima are the ones that lost their young lives there and not the “raisers”.

Wasted Potential
Candidly, I found this book to be poorly written. If you're looking for captivating prose that exudes wisdom and exhibits keen insight, you're in the wrong place. A high school student could write better. That said, the story is so compelling that it completely overwhelms the poor writing. It was certainly worthy of a better treatment than it got; and if it had received it, there would have been an unreserved 5 stars...

Or 9 year old read it in a couple of days! Easy to read and all about the heroes of the day.

More personal than mitary.
This book is a great review of the battle for Iwo Jima. However, a large part of the book is dedicated to the personal backgrounds, feelings, and families of the six flag raisers. There are a lot of interesting and salient details in those personal depictions, but I was in it for the military and social history. The personal details are really the focus of this book. If that's you're cup of tea, it's probably a 5 star book. For me it was 3.5 which I rounded up for this review.

Good book
Well done by the author to gather all he information needed. It really went into good detail about the lives of each of the figures and gave lots of respect to them. I give it four stars only because it is a little slow at parts.

US Marines v. Japan
I was interested in reading about the Battle for Iwo Jima. This book provides a good roadmap, plus is adds the human element to the story. The flag raisers were typical Marines who simply were at the right place at the right time to participate in the most iconic photo ever. Great story.

Adapted for young readers! Not the standard edition.
Be careful when ordering this edition of "Flags of Our Fathers." After receiving the book, I noticed that it had been "adapted for young readers!" I don't have a standard edition for comparison, so I can't say what's been changed or how well it reads. I just wanted to give others a warning so they don't repeat my mistake.
