Concordia: The Lutheran Confessions Leather Bound – September 1, 2011

"Is called, and forever will be called the harmonious and concordant Confession." "This Confession alone, we say, and no other." For a confessional Lutheran, the Concord is our statement of belief. It is what binds us, guides us. It is our confession to pass on to our children. In discussing faith controversies it says "the result of these things is that the pure doctrine is hidden and lost. Then nothing is passed on to future generations except academic opinions and delays of judgment." This is our confession and we hold it dear and clear and has held for over 485 years. It has endured because of God's grace and this book that allows us to clearly state and hold fast to what we believe God said in His word. It is not some strange book that is a secondary Bible to us, as some believe, nor do we hold it higher than the Bible in any way. It is simply our confession of faith, drawn from His word. As such, I am thrilled with this compact edition that allows me to carry it with me at all times. I have the large version, but it is very large and difficult to even casually read at home. This one is a delight to hold and read. While the cover is beautiful, with Luther's seal on it embossed on the cover, it is the DuoTone leather imitation that is so popular but that won't hold up long term. I will have it rebound in leather and pass it on to my children when I'm gone, which is the purpose for which it is written.

This is the compact edition of this work. I have both. The advantage to this smaller edition is portability. This is the work that has all the "symbols" of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. The term "symbol" is a theological term meaning creeds or confessional statements. This is what a Confessional Lutheran holds to. I have read it cover-to-cover and it is well done. It uses the ESV translation for scriptural references (except where noted in the text). The LCMS is unique among Protestant churches for holding to the real presence of Christ in the Lord's Supper. They hold that it is much more than merely a memorial or remembrance sacrament. This book brought me back to my Lutheran roots. If you want to know what a Confessing Lutheran believes, this book is it.

Got this a week ago and absolutely love it already. It's very nimble sizewise and still the text is large enough to be pleasant to read. Cover feels good to hold and handle. Comes in a small box in which it is protected from hits and other stuff in a bag or wherever one puts this nugget in and that's a lot of places since it's genuinely pocket/portable.And it's certainly the only such edition of the BOC in the whole world!

I am doubly pleased with the portability of this edition of Concordia: The Lutheran Confessions and the ease of reading the typeset which is very comfortable for such a compact edition. The beautiful cover and gilded pages are an added plus. The book will occupy a prominent place on my bookshelf for ready accessibility.

I like the smaller size. Leather is nice and soft. Came very quickly.

While this an otherwise awesome edition of the Book of Concord, the quality of craftsmanship could be much better. Just because it is a smyth-sewn binding doesn’t let it off the hook for how the pages are not laid well against the binding. The pages are set too tight against the binding. Additionally, I find the many pages are already affected by moisture even before I open it up, and appear wrinkled. I wish there was a way to flatten them out straight again.I’ve noticed a lot of books from Concordia Publishing house are like this, and one of the reasons I mostly avoid their books (especially for their high prices). If you pay a high amount, you expect good quality, which I really don’t think I’m receiving.
