It is a set of two. Nice quality and screws can be adjusted to the height you want. Pedals are screwed counterwise and I think they came marked right or left. Don't worry you will be happy with them.

are these good for general in town riding or specifically for mtb trail or dirt biking?

They are sturdy and are highly effective at gripping all shoe types. While I predominantly use my bike off trail, I do ride a good bit on roads, and they work fine!! Great product for the price!!!
