Pit Bulls for Dummies

Essential for any owner of a Pit Bull
D. Caroline Coile has nailed it with this informative, well-researched and well-written book. She very appropriately balances the many, many positive attributes of the pit bull (comical, loving. loyal, gentle, good with children) with the warnings every pittie owner needs to hear. Her history of the breed is the best I've ever read and puts the characteristics that pit bulls exhibit today into the context of their early uses (before fighting). Her instructions for positive training are clear and easy to understand--and she explains why you should use only positive training methods with your pit bull (or any dog for that matter). She discusses a range of training aids and recommends what she feels are the most appropriate. Her explanation of terminology is clear and very useful. Information is marked with various icons that help the reader quickly find the most important parts when you go searching for it later (a feature of most of the "for Dummies" series). Her discussions of activities and registration organizations are excellent. She includes breed standards from each of the three primary organizations that register Pit Bull or American Staffordshire Terriers. Her section for potential owners of pit bulls is outstanding. I have recommended it to people who are considering adopting this breed. It is honest, but not scary. The book is very fair to the breed. I work with animal shelter dogs and have just started teaching a class for the bully breeds and in my opinion it is the best book available on Pit Bulls.

great book
I have a one and half year old pit bull mix and i wanted expert advice on how to best take care of him and avoid all the nasty stereotypes facing the breed today. I found this book loaded with easy to follow training tips.history of the breed and encouraging tips on how best to handle such a strong and powerful animal.I would recommend this book to anyone who is seeking this breed as a much loved member of the family.

Goid for beginners
Good book, I was looking for a little more of advanced Information about training the pit bull breed. I have other bull dog breeds but they are American Bullys who are trained in hog hunting so I know how to train my dogs but every breed has their own personality and I wanted to educate myself on the pit bull as much as possible so my boy is as well behaved as my other pups. This is a good book, well written but not for experianced dog handlers, more of a first time dog owners book.

Tons of info
I have a Pit Bull that I acquired at 6 weeks. This book was invaluable for understanding the breed and preparing me for my new dog. He is now 3.5 years old and I still refer to the book. It has been great information to know and share with others, both dog owners and those who don't have dogs.Pit Bulls are so misunderstood and this book helps inform the owners not only how to raise a healthy pit but also to educate others about this beautiful breed in a very straight forward manner easy for everyone.

Not for people who have had experience with Pitbulls before.
I haven't finished the book, but I've liked it so far to give it a 5 star rating. As I read some of the other reviews, it seems to me they are written by people who have had experience with Pitbulls. For those of us who are new to them this book has been a great help at understanding the history as well as to why my Pit behaves the way he does. Like when another dog walks by and challenges him, and he just stands there whining tail traight up, looking at me for aproval/permission. Great book in my humble opinion.

If you have a pitbull read this book!!
Best pitbull reference that I have found in the 12 years that I have had pitbulls. This book is honest about the breed, and will be helpful more times then you can enter imagine. I just bought it for the 4th time now (getting my new pup in a month) and have given all the other copies away as gifts to new pitbull owners. It is indispensable!!

Good enough
This product is exactly what I ordered and the condition is good. But the information is very basic and sort of pointless. Books on my shelves are trophies of information I have learned or the fictional escapes from the day to day. Either way I like to display my books they bring me joy. This book I plan to donate because the information was weak.

Great reading!
This is a great book. You don't have to follow everything to the T. It's like raising a child. Every child is different and so would the way you treat each but this is a great guidance. Pits are so smart and they got such terrible reputation.
