Glass Kiln Casting With Colour De Verre: An Introduction to Glass Frit Kiln Casting

Okay, but not great
I'd wanted this book for a while, and I was able to pick it up at a discount on Amazon. I love glass casting with Colour de Verre molds, and have several of them. I hoped the book would suggest some projects that I could create. No, not really. The book isn't bad, but it's also not great. It's only 80 pages, and published through a small press, which explains why it's fairly expensive. One of the things I was disappointed by is most of the first 20 pages is filler. Priming the molds, knowing your kiln, programming a digital kiln, and playing with frit are things that anyone planning on using molds in glass work should know. That takes up almost ¼ of the book. The projects aren't bad, once you get there. About every other project you get a 2 page spread of variations on the projects that have come before. It's nice to see the variations so you can get ideas of the different ways to apply the glass pieces once you're done.

No mold making advice - Book covers how to use their products
I did not realize that Colour de Verre was their products, they are selling. This book does a great job showing how to be successful using their molds. I actually thought I was going to learn how to make my own ceramic molds in this book. So, I purchased the wrong book, my fault. The book is well done, cant go wrong if this is what you need.

Somewhat self promoting
I was a bit disappointed in the book because the authors obviously want you to buy their molds. The projects are well thought out and explained. The photography is okay. To be really valuable they should start with an explanation of how one could make ones own molds for these projects. Most people who would be able to do these projects could be trusted to have the expertise to go beyond just buying someone elses product.

Great pictures
There is some presumtive skill on part of reader, but basically a good place to start! Would be great packaged with a kit to try the projects.

good for beginners
The book has some interesting ideas and techniques but overall seemed a bit elementary. Still, I like it as a reference

Great for the hobby crafter, but not really about true glass casting
The title of the book is misleading; both title and salespitch promise much more than the book delivers. This is not really a book about general glass casting but primarily about only one small and fairly easy aspect of it, i.e., packing frit into a premade mold to "cast" it.Ms. Persico is very skilled at using her company's premade, reusable "colour de verre" molds and frit to cast small components that eventually go into jewelry or larger, often fused glass pieces. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, Ms. Persico is a great instructor and I'd recommend this book if that's your only intent. But if you think you're buying a book that will teach you the much more complicated techniques of real glass casting and even more complicated "pate de verre," you'll be disappointed. If you're interested in learning to make your own models and molds for either transparent (reservoir or open-faced) casting or pate de verre, especially for large or complicated work, you'll need a different book. I'd recommend finding a copy of Kervin/Fenton's Pate de Verre and Kiln Casting of Glass, the Tokyo Art Institute's Pate De Verre Techniques (English translation), Glass Casting and Mold Making by Dan Fenton, to name my three favorites.

One for the would be warm glass artist maybe
Nice clear book full of colour photographs and detailed accounts of how to accomplish each project using Colour de verre moulds and glass frit. It really does go into every detail including how to prepare the mould, how to program your kiln and even how to make colour samples so you can get the colour you want. It is written by an American and so for an American market but I don't see that as a problem. Some things are a little harder to track down in the UK but can easily be obtained via the internet. Tempsford Glass stock Colour de Verre moulds in the UK but if you just google Colour de verre you'll find stockists overseas. Glass frit and billets can be bought from any number of places. I wouldn't describe this as a book for a total beginner but rather for people who are a little more comfortable with kilns and who have some knowledge of how glass behaves when it gets hot. I would certainly buy it but just be aware of how expensive moulds, kilns etc are. I also think some of the moulds are better value than others simply because you can use them for many projects.

Glass Class
A very useful book, with plenty of good photographs. It has given me plenty of ideas of how I can develope my own art work in glass. Only slight downside, the book is American and much of the equipment used ids not available here. It is still a useful book to have on the shelf especially for inspiration.
