Never too old to dream
This is the first of the Little People, Big Dreams series books I have ordered. I couldn't pass this one up as I love Zaha Hadid. Much of my architecture and design boards in my Pinterest account are dedicated to her work. She truly was a supremely talented architect and her esthetic reminds me much of Frank Gehry with her physics-defying style and distinctive use of curves. I am completely inspired by nerdy creatives, especially those who are deeply knowledgeable on convention but break the rules with passion, grace, and intelligence. She was indeed a trailblazer, a woman who came from a liberal Muslim family, and who broke the mold in her industry. She wasn't limited to architecture either as she had a true creative heart and designed many things. Her buildings are way out of reach for me, but one day I hope to own a piece of her jewelry.Copyrighted in 2019, there is no mention of how she passed in 2016. I'm not sure if this intentionally avoided for the sake of young readers. Her architectural firm lives on.My husband is an architect and he really enjoyed reading about her too, even though these books are indeed geared toward children and the writing is simplified and written to inspire young dreamers. There is a photographic spread in the back so you can see what she looked like in non-cartoon form. We don't have super young children so this book was ordered purely for my own pleasure. I enjoy it as a coffee table book as it's an easy flip through with whimsical pages but is also a factual biography with just key highlights. I like having books like this around too to keep me reminded of what is possible. The book itself is hardcover with a cloth spine and uncoated interior pages. On scanning the other available books in the back, this series seems to be weighted more toward notable women, but there are a few men featured too. I don't feel that there is an overly feminist focus but I do love that these are accessible for positive encouragement for young girls. Or even older ones like myself.

Nice book about a girl who loved architecture.
This is a book for young children that adults will enjoy. I had heard of Zaha Hadid and this book made me look up actual photos of her work. Although the artwork in the book is very good, drawings do not give you the full impression of some of the incredible curved buildings that she designed. I was inspired to see more. The design and pictures in the story are very enjoyable. The color scheme is warm and rich with shades of brown and yellow and green. The story itself is one of a talented girl who worked hard and became a famous architect. This is in the style of a picture book like you read to a pre-schooler but the content is appealing to older children and adults. The story starts out with this sentence: “Little Zaha was a Muslim girl who lived with her family in Baghdad – a city where past and present mixed in the most amazing ways.” A large picture shows the family in their modern high-rise apartment overlooking Baghdad. The parents and boys are reading and the little girl is looking off into the distance. The book will especially appeal to girls and to children who are interested in designing buildings. Also, Zaha Hadid can serve as a role model for minority children who want to find a path to a successful career in arts or science. There are two pages in the back of the book with a bio of Zaha Hadid, who lived from 1950 to 2016. There are four photos of her at different stages of life. The construction of the book seems to be sturdy with quality paper. It is manufactured in China.

Creative Child to Unique Architect
This is a children’s picture book biography for children aged four to eight years old. Hadid is a famous architect. As with all books in the series it begins with her childhood and it talks about what she did as a child which gave clues to her personal interests and how nurturing those led to the development into her career as an architect. It tells how when she was seven years old she was designing clothing and she was working on bedroom furniture. Her personality is disgusting such as choosing to do things differently than others and how that translated into designing buildings which were unique and broke the norm. How did is a Muslim although raised in a liberal family, this also focuses on her success in the field as an outlier due to being both female and Arab. As you are reading this to a child I suggest you go to the Internet and show photos of the buildings which she has designed, they are amazing and different. At the back of the book is a timeline and it tells a little bit more about her life. Rating 5 stars = Love It.
