Is this a PVA adhesive that can be used for bookbinding?

Yes.... that is exactly what this glue is made for. This glue is made by Lineco, which also goes by the name of "Books by Hand"..... it is a bookbinding company.

what is the shelf life for this product(the bottle i have is at least 3 yrs old) and is it non-toxic?

Accepted Answer

There are no anticipated health hazards when using this product, and no specific shelf life. If it was never opened, it should still be fine. If it has been opened, check for signs of bacterial growth like black spots, discoloration or a "spoiled" smell. If the product looks and smells like you would expect of a liquid white glue, then it's fine to use.

Question 3

I need to float a heavy paper, about 1/2 lb heavy in a shadow box.  Is this the right glue to float something that thick and heavy.  It is about 1/4 "

Boy, not an easy question. If you're looking to lightly spread a thin coating, then yes, but if you need a lot of adhesive, then no - PVA glue still has limitations and it works spread thin, but not thick (gets bumpy). Also, I don't like PVA glue for holding anything heavy unless there's also something else holding it. My gut says no - go with something stronger and more versatile. Rubber cement comes to mind, but if you've never used it, it can be a pain to do correctly. Do you need it to be archival? If so, look for Tyvek tapes and Filmoplast tapes. They're archival quality, come in a variety of sizes and thicknesses and strengths and should fit the bill. If you don't care about archival, do a search for 3M double-sided tapes for commercial auto use or use something like Super 77.

Can I use this on our songbooks at church?

Yes you can.  This can be used on books and is archival quality so you will not have to worry about it damaging the pages.
