Concise but well explained, comprehensive and very respectful with the traditional ways of shoji/kumiko-making. If you look for a manual explaining in detail how to make a traditional Shoji and telling you how to do it, this is your book. A definite guidebook.

What a fantastic book. You'll need this to learn basic tool use not juse making shoji and kumiko. Desmond has several exercises used to hone your sawing skills. Nice chapter on setting up a kanna. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed reading this book. I am intrigued at how such small pieces of wood make such sturdy items.I hope to purchase Mr. King's books soon to expand my knowledge and skill when making Kumino. The jigs he provides are fascinating pieces of art by themselves, and add to the mystery of producing Kumiko patterns.

I ordered the full set. The author has forced me to learn some Japanese words because the word has no English equivalent. It looks like it takes some practice and a LOT of patience. It doesn't take a full sized shop to produce these beautiful works of art. I will try this carpentry.

Avery instructional read. This book demonstrated different shoji styles and how to build them. This book is a great primer for Japanese woodworking, it talks about the tools and explains the terminology.A shoji is most frequently used to divide indoor spaces. I am trying to adapt shoji principles to outdoor usage. I want the look and feel of an indoor screen to provide privacy but I do not want the cold exclusion of a privacy fence. I want to have unconnected screens to break lines of sight and add interest.

Detailed and clear instructions. We haven't tried any of the projects yet but we're confident that if we follow the directions carefully we should be able to create something beautiful.
