Great Northern vs Gold Medal. Which one is better?
Both Great Northern Popcorn and Gold Medal are prepackaged popcorn, oil, and seasoning kits that are designed to be used with movie theatre popcorn poppers. These packages consists of three basic ingredients. Popcorn, Seasoning Salt and Oil, So let's comparePopcorn: Both use yellow popcorn and I have noticed no difference in performance Some have said that the Great Northern popcorn is a little more "stale" and while I have had bad packs, it is not a regular occurrence. I would not say that one is any "fresher" than the other.Oil: Both use coconut oil, and it appears that the same amount of oil is used. I personally believe coconut oil is the best oil for popcorn, but both manufacturers offer more "healthy" oil options. But it doesn't taste as good, and it appears the war against coconut oil may be exaggerated.Salt: This is where I believe Gold Medal rules. I think the seasoning is just better and is less salty tasting. If you are trying to limit salt intake, the Great Northern popcorn is easier to do so in, because Great American stores it's salt in a separate section. But if you use the full contents of each pack, the Great American popcorn is saltier.Ease of Use: Both are easy to use. With only two sections, I think the Gold Medal is a little easier to use. If you are trying to limit salt, you might prefer the Great American since it packages the salt separately. Both brands will give you unpopped kernels. That is somewhat a side effect of theatre style poppers. Some old maids are going to get ejected out the top. I think that Gold Medal has less unpopped kernels compared with Great Northern, but not significantly so.Bottom Line: I prefer the taste and balance of Gold Medal over Great Northern. If both are close in price, I would buy Gold Medal any day of the week. However, both Great Northern and Gold Medal popcorn Kits are good and if Gold Medal is not available, Great Northern is an acceptable substitute

Yummy
This is very easy to use and it tastes great. I don't know how it compares to other brands in unpopped corn so I can't rate that. Overall I think its very good

Good product.
I consider this the best of the prepackaged popcorn products for quantity popping machines. We have tried the "healthy" versions, which have different oil and less salt, but they just don't seem like real popcorn somehow. The oil is a little hard to extract, particularly when it is semisolid and the kettle is hot. We loan out our machine for charity functions and it always seems people decide they need more at the last moment-- the boxes are available in some restaurant-supply stores but I have found ordering online to be fast and not over-expensive.

Great Tasting Popcorn!!!
Purchased a 6oz home popcorn machine for the theater room and the hunt was on for a pre-packaged popcorn that would provide that "movie theater" taste. The first popcorn we tried was Country Harvest and the family enjoyed that popcorn and we went through the 36-packages in relatively short order. When it came time to order another box of pre-packaged corn, I went with Gold Medal's MegaPop based on the recommendation from a friend. Gold Medal also makes a very nice, heavy-duty commercial use popcorn machine, and figured they would have a good tasting popcorn. The popcorn pre-packaged has two compartments; 1) oil; and 2) popcorn mixed with salt.Well, made the first batch of Mega Pop and my daughter was all excited when she tasted the popcorn, screaming it tastes just like the movie theater!! Couldn't agree more!! The taste was GREAT!!! The majority of the popcorn popped no problem, with very few old maids. If you want to control the amount of salt and want your popcorn to have a little less salty taste, (which is what I like) just shake the bag and don't use as much of the salt that pools at the bottom of the popcorn. I have a feeling that this box isn't going to last long!!Now, my daughter has a sleep-over scheduled with six of her friends and wants me to make lots of this specific popcorn for her friends.
