The NES is one of the most iconic video game systems of all time, and is credited with ‘saving’ the American video games industry in the early 80s when it looked likely to collapse. The NES Encyclopedia is the first ever complete reference guide to every game released on the Nintendo Entertainment System, Nintendo's first industry-defining video game system. As well as covering all 714 officially licensed NES games, the book also includes more than 160 unlicensed games released during its lifespan, giving for the first time a definitive history of this important console's full library. Written by a retro gaming expert with 30 years of gaming experience and a penchant for bad jokes, the NES Encyclopedia promises to be both informative and entertaining. The NES continues to enjoy a strong cult following among Nintendo fans and gamers in general with wide varieties of officially licensed merchandise proving ever popular: both for older fans who remember it the first time around, and younger gamers discovering the system for the first time through Nintendo’s regular re-releases of its older games. Nintendo’s most recent console, the Switch, is the fastest selling video game console of all time in the United States and Japan. Nintendo will be launching a variety of classic NES games for download on the system later in 2018, meaning a new audience of gamers is due to discover the NES for the first time. Review: Well worth your time and money! - A great retrospective of the system that revitalized home video-gaming after the industry crash in 1983. A very fun read and beautifully produced, this book is great for those that have any nostalgia for the NES. Each game contains a write up with a screen shot and some trivia, and includes all licensed and unlicensed games (over 850). This isn't a "dry" reference book - the pages are loaded with funny commentary and humor. I love these kind of collective works documenting video game history, and think this is one of the better ones out there. I wasn't familiar with the author prior to hearing about this book, but I will be keeping my eyes open for possible future volumes (SNES and Genesis please!) Review: A Fun Read - As a person born in the early 80's, this book has plenty of memories contained within and tons of new information. I am planning to read it from start to finish, but sometimes I just open the book at random and browse through the screen captures. The information is well organized, rather thorough, and interesting. One thing I would have liked to see is the box art for each game. And the cover image/design is (in my opinion) poorly done... but it does give it a retro look I suppose. Overall, the book represents a huge value considering the cost of the very large hardcover edition. Makes a great addition to any library, game room, or living room.

A Fantastic History of the NES from a Fantastic Writer
I discovered Chris Scullion back when Nintendo Power shut down. Well aware of an infinite number of websites that covered gaming, some of which I regularly read already, I went searching for one that covered Nintendo specifically, with a similar vibe and enthusiasm. This search landed me on Nintendo Gamer. This is where I discovered the joy of Chris' writing and followed him from there to CVG, and eventually to his freelance work and his own blog Tired Old Hack where he continues to provide unique, relatable, and personable coverage of games. You can tell that every word of The NES Encyclopedia is written out of pure love for the system. Everything from the layout and design to the words themselves provide an enjoyable read as you learn of the NES' rich history page after page. Iconic games, or ones that are considered of great importance, like Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong, get the full page treatment. While games that are still important but somewhat less iconic get a half page, and more minor games get a quarter page. But even the lesser important titles get a fair shot at historical relevance in this book. Each entry is handled with great care and Chris’ signature relatable writing style is present throughout. The unlicensed game section in particular is quite entertaining as you read about some of the wackier things released outside of Nintendo’s watchful eye. I honestly didn’t even realize there were so many unlicensed titles and it was really fun to learn about them all. Reading this book has been an absolute joy as I’ve learned new things about games I’ve loved for years and discovered interesting games I’ve never heard of. I highly recommend this book and I am looking forward to his SNES and Mega Drive (Genesis) books coming in the future.

Hard back and hefty - full of information and a great gift for any gamer!
I love these books, as someone who values archiving video game history and a collector this is a must have. Makes a great gift for any retro gamer and really helps in determining what games to get next, filled to the brim with information and graphics and the hard cover is very nice. Highly recommend.

Solid Guide to the NA/EU NES Library
Pretty solid book. It covers all NA/EU games released for the NES, with a screenshot and paragraph or two about the game that gives you a little about its background, reception, etc. It's typically 4 games per page, but some big releases like Zelda and Metroid have much bigger spreads and more information. It's not a very pretty book. The colors - the cover and internally - feel a bit muted, but maybe that's just the NES's drab palette to blame. One thing I do wish it had? Cover art for each game. And I know it's out of the scope of the book, but I would have liked a little about some games that didn't make it to the west like Gradius II. Overall if you're into retro gaming and the NES this is a nice book to pick up.

Needs A Magnifying Glass
This is a good listing of NES games that include both authorized and unauthorized titiles. However my main gripe is the small type that requires you to either hold the e reader close to your face or get a magnifying glass in order to read it.

A big old tome of your childhood.
I first became aware of Chris Scullion via Twitter's retro scene, and was delighted to discover his blog and it's intelligent and insightful writing. As a gamer nearer 40 than 30, it was great to find someone that I felt echo'd not only my childhood thinking, but my modern day mindset and views on games as a result of my experiences with this formative era. As a huge NES fan I was therefore clearly the target audience for this book, yet it has exceeded my expectations and beyond. Firstly, the production quality is of a very high standard. Nice thick hard cover and glossy pages has meant this has already survived several encounters with my 2 and a half year old daughter and her inquisitive hands! Who has been enamoured with those glossy screenshots contained within. It also means that when not in use it looks great on the shelf, and isn't going to end up looking like your actual NES game boxes no doubt do these days. The book has a lovely clear layout. Each title in the collection (remember this is an encyclopedia, not a selective list of the author) is accompanied by a blurb, a fact and a nice clear image. Some games have a larger amount of copy than others, but every game is covered. Many of you will no doubt make a beeline for the heavy hitters or titles from your past, for me that was Punch Out (heavy hitter pun intended) and then I began to just browse through the book, as someone who loves games but no longer owns a NES this has been a fantastic companion and nostalgia blast, pretty much within the first 10 minutes of opening it I had sent two photos of the pages to my bro, my dedicated NES sidekick during the era, with a load of excitable 'remember this!?' sort of messages, and sent him more since. And this is in fact the sort of reaction Chris himself mentions wanting to incite in the intro. In the age of kickstarters, YouTubers and Streamers, virtually everyone has had access to getting their message and voice out there. As great as that is, I for one feel there is a definite difference in the quality that brings with some of the products though. And I definitely feel this is well up in the higher echelons of writing in the subject. And I say that as a self proclaimed Sega diehard too! So well and truly given this my own official seal of quality.
