Yes, ink for sure. I think there was a small starter roll of paper, not sure if takes the same paper from the old calculator that failed. Not the same as this one.

When you hit the total button, does the tape automatically advance above the tear off knife or do you have to hit feed or total button several times?

It does not go automatically. You must hit the feed or total key to advance it.
