Excellent Durable External DVD/CD Drive
I received this product today (05/10/2020) and I had tested it within 20 minutes of receiving it.It reads my current and older (loaded with photos and home-videos)DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs beautifully and quickly, both DVD formats containing 100's of personal digital photographs and home videos, and also this product was equally responsive with my other older storage-CDs. It was all fine.I also connected this new external drive via BOTH a USB 2.0 4-way hub and then a USB 3.0 4-way hub and this product ran very well on both, but responded quicker of course on the USB 3.0 hub (the USB 3.0 laptop port and 3.0 hub having a much faster transfer rate of course) but still a perfectly reasonable speed on the older USB 2.0 laptop port and 2.0 hub.Next, I burnt three folders of my more recent multiple digital-photos from my laptop hard-disk to a standard DVD-R disk using this new External DVD CD Drive, and these photo-folders transferred to the blank disk at a very speedy rate. I was very impressed indeed.Next, I loaded a contemporary music disk onto this new external DVD drive and waited a few seconds and the music disk played extremely well via both Microsoft Media Player and VLC Media Player. Yet again, no problems here whatsoever.Regarding robustness and rigidity, I can only say what I closely observed. I found this external drive to be pretty robust, with a hard casing and a stable inner pop-out mechanism for loading my DVDs and CDs onto it. Some reviewers have mentioned that they found this product a little flimsy, but I would respectfully simply compare this product to a standard laptop or desktop PC DVD-drive where, in my many years of simple day-to-day experience, those drives are more flimsy, over-flexible when they pop out of their respective computer casings, whereas I found this product to be really quite robust relatively-speaking, with a fairly rigid casing and relatively robust sliding in/out mechanism.Having a USB 3.0 and a type-C connector (you can use either/or of these connectors) is a great plus for me, and the way the loose cable can be put back into the cable-recess under the unit for transporting the unit in my laptop bag is a neat and useful addition. Therefore, overall I find this unit to be excellent, very good value indeed for the inexpensive cost, relatively robust and rigid design, and it definitely operates very well indeed in all of the basic functions that a DVD drive was intended to do (and let's not be too techy or geeky here), i.e simply to burn content, record, and play back. For me it's a no-brainer.Highly recommended by me.Kindest regards.

Short USB Cable
The drive has a versatile USB cable with 2 types of plug (normal/standard plus the small one used for connecting to small machines - Type C? - not the one for scanners/printers), but it has a couple of drawbacks. It is very short (120 mm/5" approx.), so I have to keep mine on top of my PC's casing, obstructing part of the ventilation panel, and it is not detachable so it cannot be replaced with a longer one (though this may be an advantage as it cannot be lost). It is probably most suitable for use with a laptop or possibly a mobile phone, if the device has an appropriate socket. The drive receives its power through this cable, which can be stored in a recess in the bottom of the casing. The minimalist instructions appear to make reference to powering it with an independent power cable if difficulties are experienced, but no such cable is supplied and I cannot find any socket for such a power cable to fit into.

Great alternative!!
It was as easy to install and use as plugging it in, inserting a DVD and it appearing on my computer screen. The quality/resolution of the picture in the screen is lower, but I do not know if that is due to the product, or me downloading a new player on my new computer to reproduce the contents of the DVDs.One thing to improve for the future would be to maybe make the cable a tiny bit longer. My new computer sits on a stand to match my eye level. As such, the player is left hanging unless I stack some things underneath to level it up. I don't mind doing that, it is a suggestion for future developments.I love the fact that the cable has it own room within the device.

It works but
It definitely works but it took 4 apps to find one which was recognised by my Asus/Windows 10 netbook - plus first the disk got stuck and wouldn't eject and then it did nothing but try to eject. To be honest, after all that pfaffing around, I'm pleasantly surprised it actually does work and I have a DVD (The Wild Geese!) playing happily in the background.

Well constructed but didn’t work for me
It’s lightweight and seems quite well made. Cables are short but long enough to attach to my MacBook Air.iTunes recognised the drive when it had a disc in but that’s where the fun started.I’d say for every 10 discs the drive probably managed to read 5. Those that it did read were either really noisy or took a long time to rip.Discs with any blank space on the outside edge seemed to be a no go for the drive and when the drive failed to read then it would sound really loud and wouldn’t eject. To get the disc out required the drive to be disconnected and connected again.Maybe I just got unlucky but I’ve returned the drive after trying it for a couple of days.

careful with compatibility. it's probably great if compatible. my fault not theirs!
hi sorry i can't contact you another way - please could you send me the driver link as you offer in the product leaflet in the box? I had the item for ages but only opened it today and it doesn't work on my computer but works on my husbands laptop, so I need the driver link I think? I can't find it online and there's no other way to contact you. At the moment this is a bit useless to me! it's probably great if it is compatible with your computer! thanks.

Cheap but does the job
I bought this as I upgraded to an iMac but still buy CDs which I rip so I can play on my iPhone. It feels very cheap but I suppose that’s because it is very cheap. It does the job, and that’s presumably all anyone wants it for.Compared to the drive in my old PC, it is very slow and takes several minutes to rip an album. It’s not a deal-breaker for me but is a bit annoying. If looks, build quality and speed don’t matter then this is a great purchase as I couldn’t find any as cheap. I’ll use it rarely and it’ll be in a drawer the rest of the time so I’m happy enough with it.

Good for the price
This works well although the front of the pop out draw is a bit flimsy on the right side, and it would be easy to break it.The reason for 4 stars and not 5 is that the lead Is a bit short. It’s nice that it tucks away into a slot on the back, and that it has a Usb and a C connection, but It would be nice if the lead was a bit longer. Overall though for the price it’s very good.
