is this a quality item or a throw away?

This is garbage. It does not play CDs without odd playback problems. If it had actually worked, it would still be overpriced considering the size. This is my third boombox CD player in the last 30 days. I keep sending them back to Amazon because they are all unplayable junk. I don't know if it's related to the Chinese trade war or if China just forgot how to make a CD player. I'm still looking for a quality (by quality I mean anything that will correctly play CDs) replacement for my last portable stereo which was an awesome Craig Electronics CD Boombox with AM/FM Stereo Radio. Amazon stopped carrying them and replaced the item with this Jensen junk. Still looking . . .

Can it be used with ear buds?

I purchasedt as a gift for a friend I don't know if it can be used with ear buds I am sorry I could't help you.

Can you use with batteries

On the bottom of my stereo it says that it takes 8 "C" batteries. However the description only says 6.

i am looking for a radio that will have good reception and not fade away from station that i am listening to. how is this one?

This radio does seem to pick up stations better than my old one. Nice long antenna and seems to tune in really good without fading.
