The piece called “a”, came locked in place in the box. now i cannot unlock it so this particular strap is useless. how do i unlock “a”?

You can still unlock the strap, following these instructions. Use a butter knife or a flat tool to gently pry between the strap and the cover on top it. In our testing, the following instructions helped us avoid paint damage: To safely remove the strap locks: Take a piece of fishing string (or floss) and slide it from side to side in a downward motion, behind each base of the strap lock.
