Bose delivers great sound
I have owned Polk TSI500, Definitive Technology SM45s which I have reviewed here in amazon, wanted to check out the direct reflected sound from Bose. After owning this product for a couple of months now, I can now discuss them in full. Low Points compared to the competition Having owned products from Polk and Definitive, I can attest that in terms of build quality the BOSE301s are bit of a let down. The maple finish is good to look at and the front plate that has the tweeter on it turns from silver to black depending on the light it gets, pretty cool. But apart from that the cabinet as the whole seems to be built a bit cheaply. this might be the only reason for me to knock a point off the product. Definitve Techs finish is impeccable and the studio monitors have a heft which suggests a well built and dampened cabinet. I still have those in my house for my bedroom. But heck, how many times have you had visitors to your home go near speakers and pick them up or go up close with a magnifying glass and check out imperfections on the wood. If you are a part of that audiophile class you wont be looking at this product anyways. My aim was to get good sound at a lower price point and this Bose delivers that in spades. the overall speaker looks great on a stand next to your TV. A quick note on Power needed to run these speakers A little less efficient than Polk or definitive but not by much. I use a Sony elite amplifier (100W per channel) to run my home theater, and where the Polks or definitives would sound mildly loud at -28 to -30db, the Bose needs to be pushed upto -25 to 28db. all this shows is the speakers are a little less efficient and need a little more power to be driven loud. And trust me they can be driven loud to ear splitting levels very easily without damaging the speakers. So the takeway here is that you do not need a professional amplifier to run these, a good HT receiver will do the job very well. On the plus side now, sound is where the BOSE 301s outshine the competition. Polks as well as Defenitives have an immediate sound to them. They place the music in front of the TV giving a forward presentation. The Bose 301s on the other hand take the other approach,a very laidback but wide soundstage. the performer is placed behind the TV or the speakers. In essence they just vanish leaving you with a room filled with beautiful music. If you do not like this kind of sound you might want to skip the product. Placement is key in gettting great sound out of these guys. I followed Bose placement rules and have them spaced out 10 feet away from each other and around 4 feet of space from each side wall. Behind them i made to sure to leave less than a foot of space, around 8 inches from the rear wall. This works great in my living room which has a 20 foot*15 foot space. If you do not have the space I would suggest the 201s instead. These use 8inch drivers and do need the space for sounding good and the rear space as well as the side walls are needed for the room enveloping sound. If your room does not have side walls or is open on one side, then these speakers might not sound good. So make sure you check your room before you buy these. My HTs auto callibration set these up as large which meant they can go low as mose floor standing speakers do. however I have a good subwoofer, so went in and manually set them up to cut off at 70Hz and this seemed to be the best point for my room and pairing of the Polk PSW505 subwoofer. Your cut off point might have to vary based on your room and the subwoofer you have. you will know the best point when there is no booming bass and the speakers kind of vanish from the sound stage. In conclusion if you enjoy music and movies and need theater like sound quality or a concert hall like enveloping experience for everyone in the room I highly recommend that you go buy these. If you want have the artist stay in front of you and play for you alone, look elsewhere.

An Outstanding Bookshelf Speaker at Any Price
The reviewer below identifying himself as "An Electronics Fan" obviously has a deep bias against Bose. His multiple reviews about Bose products--here and elsewhere--are transparently motivated by some animus against Bose. Was he fired by Bose? Did a member of the Bose family reject his romantic advances? Did a Bose executive accidentally run over his cat? Did he drop a Bose speaker on his foot and hurt his toe? The true motivation for this guy's negative reviews would be fun to know. In the meantime, what we do know is that he has no credibility, and his reviews (two here, others elsewhere for other Bose products; he's made maligning Bose his life's work, apparently)) should disregarded. I bought a set of black 301's several years ago to go with my Onkyo receiver. We have it hooked up to a television and DVD player for movies. These speakers are in constant use both for the DVD and for music of all types. The room in which they are placed is huge, with an 18 foot-high flat ceiling. The speakers saturate the room with exquisite sound day after day. The speakers work fine for spoken audio for DVD's; we can hear dialogue perfectly; I feel no particular need for a surround-sound system. Several times my young daughters have turned on the 100 watt amp with the volume turned all the way up or close thereto. I feared a ruptured speaker cone, but the 301's are very forgiving, no damage has been done. The cats sleep on the speakers; they clean right up and still look new after five years. These speakers keep on giving total satisfaction, and I quite simply love them. About three years ago I decided to go all out in another room and bought the highest quality stereo stuff on the market, or at least what I determined to be best after a lot of research. This included a set of the gold-series tower speakers from Monitor Audio. (The speaker cones are metallic, with some amount of gold, and gold connections, etc., etc.) These Monitor Audios have to be the best looking speakers ever made (real wood veneer cabinetry, with the gold cones and the black covers, etc.). These speakers cost well over a thousand dollars each. Well, I must confess, as awesome as the Monitor Audios sound, I can't really say they sound any better than the Bose 301's!!! They can maybe handle more power, but I assure you the Bose 301's will play loud enough to bring the cops to your doorstep in five minutes or less. So, when I recently set up my third stereo in a bedroom, I looked forward to buying a third type of speakers. I ran around and listened to what I could find on display. Well, after much contemplation, I went for a second set of the Bose 301's!!! They just couldn't be beat, and I would have gladly spent more if I had found something I liked better. But I'm not going to spend more just so I can say I spent a lot...there has to be increased performance. And, in my opinion, the 301's couldn't be out-performed by any other bookshelf speaker of any price range. My first set of 301's were black. This time I went for the cherry. Folks, these are absolutely beautiful speakers: almost as cool looking as my Monitor Audios. The black cover and the black housing fixture in the back really accentuate the cherry colored wood. No, it is not real wood, but it looks very nice. These things are simply gorgeous. The kind of "mod" or futuristic shape which Bose has designed really stands out in this lighter-colored version. And, yes, they sound just as good as my original pair. I listen to soft music (jazz, typically, or ambient) in the morning and these speakers deliver all the nuances at very low volume; I listen to hard rock at high volume on other occasions, and the 301's don't scare away or distort at all: these things would tear the house apart before they'd lose sound quality. So, yes, I recommend these highly. They'd still be the speaker of choice for me at three or four times the price.

They SOUND GOOD.
There are a lot of people that either love or hate Bose. I get that. I’m not going to review Bose here. I’m going to review the speakers and how they sound in the room and for the setup that I wanted. I liked the way these looked on the Bose speaker stands and how it fit the room or the concept that I wanted speakers for in the first place. My biggest fear is that I wouldn’t be happy with the sound vs. a full size set of floor standers. I wanted to build a 2.1 channel system for the room with my pool table. Watched all of the YouTube videos, read all of the reviews. The first place I go on reviews is the lowest ratings. Why did people not like these speakers? Damage during shipping, faulty products (and anyone that manufactures will have lemons), and then there were people that just hate Bose and said something else was better. I wish those types of reviews would stop. I would never submit a bad review because UPS sucks. I just don’t hold this against the product. I bought these eyes wide open, and ready to return them if I wasn’t satisfied. So........... How’d they do? They sound great. Super happy. They sound bigger than they are. They don’t blast your face off, they just sound good regardless of volume. Speaking of volume they get loud. One of the points that I gleaned out of the reviews is that they aren’t as efficient as some other speakers and that others have found that more power wakes them up. I paired them with a Harman Kardon 3770. That receiver advertises 120W x 2, and has a dedicated LFE output. Hooked that up and was super happy. Don’t know what the db ratings are, but it SOUNDED GOOD. Cranked it up louder than I need and these (relatively) little speakers sounded loud and clear. Haven’t got them to distort yet. Good details. Just sound big. I have no interest in looking at other speakers anymore. I’m that happy. Good bass for the size, and if you listen to them long enough without a sub you may very well talk yourself out of one, but.............. I wanted more. I added a Velodyne Impact 12 MK2. (Newer model not available on Amazon when this was typed) Done. It MAJORLY picks up the low end that speakers this size, or floor standers with 6-8” low ends lack. I would highly recommend these to those who are looking for great sound in a compact package. If you want a nice 2.1, pair them with a decently powered receiver and a sub. They sound great on their own. The sub just fills in another level at the volume that these put out. These are not face melters. They are room fillers. I’ve returned more than a few Bose products over the years. Not a Bose fanboy. I will never return these, and for the game room that I wanted to add a classic 2 channel (2.1) I am super happy with these. I would highly recommend the Bose stands. Just looks good. One other common knock on these is that the quality of construction and components is inferior to the competition. Looking at them I would agree. Paper cone subwoofers in 2018? However they just sound good with the power I’m pushing. In the end, I was teetering between Polk Tsi500’s or Klipsch RP280f’s. Those speakers are undoubtedly better than these. But for the size, sound reproduction, and money, I’ll never think I should have tried the others. I’m really that happy, and I realize that these are perfect for the space that I put them in.

Bose 301 speaker set
This set of speakers just goes to showcase the beautiful sound quality that Bose is known for. Highly recommended. A great value for the money. I have not set the bluetooth (that will be tomorrow. Ease of set up was very easy.

Great pair of speakers...filled the "void" nicely
I purchased these speakers to replace an aging set of Paradigm Titans. I absolutely LOVED the Titans and was horrified when the woofer surround started dry-rotting. I wasn't sure what I was going to do! I researched repairing the surround, but I was afraid I'd negatively affect the sound output of the speaker. I made this purchase on a whim. I went to Crutchfield's website, clicked Home Theater & Audio --> Home Speakers --> Bookshelf Speakers, and sorted the results by Customer Ratings. Lo and behold, the 301's were the first result with 28 people giving them an average ~5 star rating. I would've ordered the set from them, but I decided that I should take advantage of my Amazon Prime trial. :-) My parents bought a pair of Bose towers (bought new in the mid 90's...I don't remember the model) which sounded great. They were given an older set of Acoustimass speakers (two satellites & sub) made in the mid 80's, and for their age they sound pretty good. They also bought a Wave radio which, in my opinion, sounds awesome compared to it's size. With that said, I figured...why not? I connected them to my Denon AVR-790 receiver (90 watts per channel), ran the Audyssey setup, and then sampled some music via my iPhone 4 (EQ turned off) with the receiver switched to "Pure Direct". The speakers perform exactly as expected. Poorly recorded music sounds like crap, but well recorded music sounds AWESOME! Do these speakers outperform the Titans? It's hard to say. However, these speakers do create a more "room filling" sound than the Titans did. All in all, the speakers are great. I'm glad I purchased them and I look forward to many years of fine movie watching and "tuneage" :-D.

Old school sound
Crystal clear sound with Bose 901 for the front and the 301 for the rear channel hooked up to a 50 year old Sansui QRX 6001. Bose 301 arrived early packaged with care and bubble wrap like no tomorrow. Very happy customer.

Bose continues to improve
I will try to keep it short. After upgrading other components of our family room sound system, I looked into the Bose 301's. I had a pair of old Bose 301's that I still liked. (About 35 years old---one must assume technology has advanced since then.) On Amazon read reviews of these new 301's by other buyers. At least three people had the same situation, namely, an old pair of 301's but upgraded. They were very pleased with the new Bose offering. Based partially on those reviews, I bought them and I am extremely pleased with the results. The new 301's seem "brighter" but retain the spacious sound ambiance that Bose is famous for. Perhaps the brighter sound is the result of adding a second tweeter. I chose Bose originally for voice quality and the new 301's retain that. I also have a pair of Bose 901's on a different system which I consider the best speakers ever made, also chosen for their voice quality and ambience. My system consists of a new Onkyo stereo (2 channel) anp, the 301's, and a Yamaha powered sub-woofer. They are fed from the cable box and a blu-ray DVD player, all hooked up via HDMI connections. (No more RCA cables!) I have discovered one can have very nice sound from two bookshelf speakers and a sub-woofer. The sub-woofer is optional of course, but crossing over the 301's into the woofer at 80 Hz does extend the bass effects. One word of advice. Bose speakers need air around them. It is part of their design to achieve their ambient and spacious sound. Be sure to follow the instructions as to the clearance dimensions required around them for their placement. These are not typical "in your face" shotgun speakers. They produce a very natural sound that literally wraps around you if properly placed.

Give them time…
Honestly, at first these speakers were just ok. Wasn’t impressed at all. Almost didn’t like them. But in time, after they break in, they sound really good. I’ve read speakers take around 100hrs to break in. Whatever the actual hours it took, there was a point where they become better and better until I was really impressed. And remember, initially was very disappointed. Im not an audiophile, but I appreciate and was looking for really good sound from my tv and have these powered by a Sonos Amp with their bass and rears. The bass from these compliment the deep and powerful Sonos bass giving some really powerful low end. These were purchased in late 2019, pre Covid inflation so at that price it felt like I should have spent more to get more but I stuck with them and they sound better than ever now…. and they were cheap… overall very, very happy. Of course there’s always something better at higher price points but why pay more when these do a really nice job.

Fantastic sound
Despite their size, the Bose 301 Series V Stereo Speakers give out a rich, warm sound that fills the room, even at low volume.

CASSE FENOMENALI
Completamente soddisfatto dell'acquisto! Consigliatissime!

Bose lives up to it's reputation!
Awesome sound quality! These speakers are definitely bigger in size than what I expected. I guess the quality is largely dependent on the amplifier and source you're using. I have a decent amplifier (although a cheap brand) and I usually connect it with my laptop through a Bluetooth transmitter (as my laptop Bluetooth connection is not good), and they sound perfect. The bass is on the heavier side so I keep it a bit low. Although I love bass heavy speakers, it gets a little muddy on high settings (which is common for most speakers). This could be because of the size of my room. These are direct reflecting loudspeakers so are meant to be placed in larger spaces. But I'm still happy since it sounds perfect after adjusting the equalizers. There's no distortion even at higher volume. I'm very happy with this purchase and would probably invest in a better amplifier in the future to further improve the sound quality.

Klasse Lautsprecher
