Brilliant. Should be on many more book lists and in many more classrooms
IN an era of teaching multiculturalism, this book by Sam Selvon is a pioneer and a work of genius and heartbreaking accomplishment. It's about the West Indian community in London after the massive immigrations but before the riots of the 1960s. Told in a kind of pigeon patois, this book is part picaresque, part travelogue, all the way funny and dark and lyrical and beautiful.

A required read, but not a bad one
Had to buy this book for a class. I loved it though after discussing the vernacular used I remember still liking certain scenes and its making me want to go back to London while also appreciating the migration story and seeing parallels close to home.

For Class, but Kept after the class ended
I got this book for class but I ended up adding it to my personal collection. Very good work, I recommend for anyone looking to get a feel of life in the UK for Caribbean immigrants.

Hard to find gem
This evocative novel transports you back to the 1950's to relive the journey of so many Caribbean immigrants to Britain. It captures so well the voices of exile and also self-discovery of the newly-arrived residents. Mr. Selvon's gift for language and dialogue is truly remarkable.

Educational
Almost true to life experiences of West Indian immigrants in England around the 1950's. My parents expressed similar events so this book is not so far from the truth. Interesting read.

Brilliant
I adored this book from the first page to the last. The characters are so real, so human and anyone who knows even modern London, can smell and taste the streets. Funny, sad, intelligent and honest.
