Beautiful Story about the Complexity of the Immigrant Experience
Beautiful story based on the author's own experience as a gifted Bedouin struggling to reconcile his harsh background with his conviction to lead a successful life. I particularly admired how he tackled the inner turmoils of immigrants, being one myself, and found his experience to be very relatable and extremely relevant with the new refugee crisis reaching its climax.A must-read for expats and Westerners who would like to get a glimpse into the thought processes of young immigrants and their invisible struggles in their host countries. I hope that it would show that at the end of the day we are all striving for the same ideals of love, dignity and justice despite our ethnic and ideological differences.

Vivid and beautifully descriptive imagery
Fantastic novel. The imagery is so vivid and beautifully descriptive. The story itself is also quite inspiring, especially knowing the background of the author himself.

Very well written. A very pleasant read. Gives an accurate picture of pee civil war Syria and what life is like in oil gulf states a well as some understanding of what motivates Bedouins that more or less were forced either by their governments, exigenciesof modernity or the enroachment of Western colonialism. Should be more widely read in the US.

Revealing.
I preferred the first half of this story. The last few chapters reminded me of 'The Little Prince'.Overall a solid 3 stars. I'm more into female empowerment.

How does ambition come to a Bedouin boy living in the desert?
People should be reading this book. It is good and is about a world I do not know. I am in an unknown land when I read about the Bedouin people, the desert and growing up in Syria. Malouf is an orphan, raised by his grandmother who does not want him to go to school because she wants him to be a shepherd. Through all sorts of hardships Malouf defies his village and his family, he attends school, and is a brilliant student who goes on to get a PhD in chemistry. He is driven to suceed and is blinded by the new world he has discovered while studing in France Fadia, a lovely young Syrian girl, has been his only friend and he soon forgets her as he moves on in his chosen field. The promises made to her are forgotten, as is his beloved desert. As the story moves on he becomes conflicted about his life. Mohed Altred is an excellent writer and the book feels that he is at home in the setting. I found the beginning a bit stiff, but probably the translation from French into English took some of the warmth. Later in the story the warm flow of words will return.
