Good book to go with your Earth Sheltered Housing books …
…such as John Hait's "Passive Annual Heat Storage".Written in an easy to comprehend style this book makes a lot of sense about heating/cooling almost any kind of home. No fancy electrical or plumbing work, nothing to break or wear out, I think it's within the capabilities of most readers to add such a system to their home.I learned a few things reading this book, you will too.

Lots of great info!
Ive been searching for info online for quite some time now. I plan on building an earthbag home with earth tubes underneath. This book has so much great info. I'm not sure why the author didn't get someone to proof read her book before publishing. It's full of grammar mistakes and typos. Still an excellent book!

Earthtubes made easy! This is such important info for those who want to live A/C free or off-grid.
This is a great resource! Sharon has opened up my mind to so much great information. I'm looking forward to implementing many passive solar ideas in the future natural building projects on our land. Here in North Carolina, we can still have some hot days in the summer, so to use a solution like earth tubes is a great way to live without A/C! Sharon also just came out with a book on green building that I'm looking forward to.

Great way to get a bit of conditioned air into interior spaces.
This system works in whole house remodels. There are some bits of information that should be checked but the overall presentation here is well-worth the time. I've been involved in the passive and active energy industry, as it serves construction and remodeling, since the early 1970s and have studied these and other passive systems quite a lot. Fascinating how something so simple can be so effective. These tubes could be of PVC, ABS, Polypipe, or anything else that doesn't easily crush or deteriorate buried in the ground. There are some complications with the drain holes, depending on ground water level, plantings (roots), critters, soil consistency and makeup, and some other things, but her idea of a sump at a lowered end would work well as it's a defined/confined location where maintenance can be performed as needed without opening up the trenches where the pipes are buried. Even if the sump had to be dug up and replaced occasionally it would be simpler than digging up the trenches. One way to augment this system is with a solar chimney concept located in the building to help draw the air through the tubes more effectively. That could even be an exhaust vent high in the home (multiple story homes as an example). Some locations builders use very large corrugated metal drain pipes for these.

An essential resource for green living
I was familiar with the concept but not the implementation of earth tubes. Learning the historical aspects and wide use of earth tubes around the world was a complete surprise, compliments to the Ms Buydens for this inclusion. This historical information on cooling systems would justify the purchase. But history is only the tip of this iceberg, the book is chocked full day useful information, sketches, scientific background, and how to guides. By following the diagrams and information given by the author I could install earth tubes in a house. This book is worth a read for all energy conscious individuals.
