Sorry, the strainer cannot work with garage disposal.

Q: Does the stopper fit with the basket inside or does the basket need to be removed before plugging in the stopper?

The stopper fits with basket inside and makes a nice close to even bottom of sink

Q: Will this work on a thick Shaw fire clay sink?

This model may have difficulty fitting in thick fireclay sink, but we have another model NDA0029 that should fit as it has a long screw. In addition, NDA0029 is on sale now, so it's a good deal:)

Q: do i have to use plumbers putty?

No. The foam gasket goes on the top, and the rubber gasket on the underside of the sink.
