Murder on the Orient Express (Poirot Series)

Unforgettable plot
Now, THAT is a murder mystery for the books! Whew! Agatha sure knew how to write 'em. Now I understand why this title is such a popular classic. (If you haven't read Murder on the Orient Express, you just should.) ... What a flabbergasting, jaw-dropping solution -- by none other than Mr. Hercule Poirot. As is the case of many Christie plots... a murder takes place, an entire cast of witnesses and suspects is produced, and Poirot uses his little gray cells for all they're worth, until a suitable answer appears as to the murderer's identity. This murder event just happens to take place on a snowbound train in Europe. With no footprints in the snow leading away, it's safe to surmise that the killer is still roaming among the locomotive's society. (Except, of course, that's not safe at all, for the living!)The book is set up in an ever-so-precise way of each chapter corresponding to an individual witness's report. It's done in a way of tallying up the evidence from every angle, very categorically. (It makes for a fun, yet strategic, read.)Overall, this one is pretty amazing. Also, it's unforgettable.

Classic favorite
A fun cozy mystery. This is my husband's favorite author, so I knew I had to pick up a couple. Great ending.

it's a solid standalone and a good introduction into the world of Detective Hercule Poirot
"Ma foi," said M. Bouc with violence. "But why does everybody on this train tell lies?""That," said Poirot, "is what we are about to find out."In preparation for the upcoming movie, I purchased a copy of this book. I kept meaning to read others in the series, I own a few of them, but this was my first foray into the series. I don't think it's necessary to read the ones preceding this one to follow this one along; it's a solid standalone and a good introduction into the world of Detective Hercule Poirot.Having just completed a case in Syria, Hercule Poirot is bound for Stamboul, hoping to enjoy a few days of leisure. Unfortunately, he receives a telegram related to another case during his connecting train ride, forcing him to head to London. Luckily, he's able to snare the lone seat on the train headed back and settles in for what he assumes would be a calm three-day journey. But that's not what happens, and we get to the crime fairly quickly. Just after midnight, the train is stopped in its tracks because of a snowdrift. In the morning, the passengers on the Orient Express will awaken to learn that one of their own, a man by the name of Ratchett, has been murdered. The story is divided into three parts, making it go fairly fast. I really enjoyed it, and thought it was a good introduction for me to the series. The book features an exceptional cast of characters and little by little, motives are revealed for the murder. I thought that the setting was constructed nicely as well, a group of a dozen strangers trapped on a wintry, snowy day with no one around for miles. The language was simple and thought the book was published over 80 years ago, it still holds up.
