Indian Basket Weaving

Good reference book
Overall I thought the book was interesting. It gave instructions for various basket types and materials used. The pictures were poor. I felt the instructional pictures could have been better. An experienced basket maker could probably figure everything out. Probably not the best book for a beginner. But still a great reference book for the materials and techniques used by the Native peoples in basket making.

A beautiful little reference for any level basketeer.
This book is a reprint of the original 1903 version. The writing and comments are charmingly dated. The photos are clear, even though in black and white. The instructional drawings are easy to follow. This will be my reference book for great designs for years to come.Great buy.

Not for beginners wanting to learn "basics"
I'm sorry to say anything bad about this, because I do see the value of a book like this, but...although it says it "covers all of the basic techniques," it's obviously meant for intermediate or more advanced basketweavers. It doesn't list SPECIFIC supplies (other than raffia/raphia), but instead refers to "reed" and "needle" with no info about WHAT KIND, SIZE, ETC. As I've found, there's lots of different materials referred to as reed, as well as different sizes, shapes, etc. Same with needles. Something that covers "basic" things should address these topics for someone who doesn't automatically know what would be best or most suitable.

but it’s nice to have physical copy - nothing compared to that ...
I had this book on my kindle, but it’s nice to have physical copy - nothing compared to that experience!

My sister was happy to receive this present.
Based on what my sister told me, a person who loves basket weaving and is quite accomplished as a basket weaving artist, she was pleased to receive the book that included many designs that are common amongst the native tribes of the Southwest in America. My only disappointment was that illustrations in the book were all in black and white, not color, like the photograph on the front cover of the book.

This is a reprint from a 1903 publishing!
This book covers indigenous basketry and gives basic techniques about a variety of woven and coiled baskets. However, it was written and first published in 1903 (I read comments about the bad quality of the pictures, that's because it is a 115 year old reprint) In those days teaching was done in a different way which is less appealing to me today. Also, basket weaving was still more common, and there were examples around in everyday life, it seems that the author expects that knowledge of the reader. Some materials are named as if they are common knowledge, but after more than 100 years a lot is not available or unclear as to what the ingredient is or does. Modern materials are not mentioned obviously and this leaves the reader in the dark what to obtain. That said, the book brushes on a lot of different styles and techniques which are very interesting. It might not be enough to bring a basket to a good end when you are a beginner, but with help from youtube and internet it is a nice addition.
